    Cast iron?

Picking the brains of the forum about this hammer head. It looks like a club or lump hammer. I've added the handle. I bought it to use as a smaller mallet for bee fence work, cleaning off bricks etc. It weighs about 3lbs with the handle. It was sold as an "antique cast iron hammer head". The...

    Methods to reduce swarming

This is an old research paper by I.W. Forster from NZ. Any opinions or comments about some of the findings? https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/00288233.1969.10421245

    Candles at the Abbey

Watching the coronation of our King, I noticed some impressively large candles being walked around during proceedings in the Abbey, and expected them to be those lovely beeswax ones, but I'm not sure they were? Anyone know about the candles there?

    Air and crystallisation

Does anyone know why exposing liquid honey to air (eg. uncapping it) causes (or starts/hastens) crystallisation?

    Queens and Prime Swarms

I think it is correct to say that a swarm always has a queen...at least initially? I also believe that the first or prime swarm contains the older mated queen and subsequent cast swarms a virgin queen or probably not infrequently, multiple virgins. I've certainly seen more than one virgin queen...

    Dark bee and viruses.

NSW DPI Bee Biosecurity Officers visited New Zealand where varroa mites are established and I was looking at the video below. At around the 1:20 minute to 1:35 minute mark a couple of dark bees appear. One of the biosecurity officers can be heard saying that the dark bee is "a virus affected...

    How to stop the spread?

What would you experienced varroa beeks suggest be done at this stage? https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2022-06-24/varroa-mite-detected-at-newcastle-port/101180446

    Lots of pollen bottom box

I was reducing the boxes on a colony today (for winter) and found the bottom box (I use smaller boxes) quite well stocked with pollen ( no nectar or brood in it). The queen and a small amount of brood was above it, and it formed a reasonably decent layer directly under the brood. Good honey...

    Best place to get stung?

Plenty about the worst place to get stung, but what about the best place? I know some have "researched" it, but what do you think? A recent sting on the fleshy part of my hand towards the wrist (but not the wrist), wasn't too bad....can get to the sting quickly and seemingly enough flesh there...

    Housel Positioning of frames

It has been briefly discussed here before, but not for a while from what I can see. Has anyone on the forum given this a good try? Any comments or conclusions welcome!

    Beeswax competition

I'm hoping for some guidance for presentation of beeswax for judging. It is to be " a 500 gram block". Is there a rule for how exact that weight needs to be and is there any guidance as to the shape /depth of the block? If there are no rules, what is considered the best way of presentation...

If you like trains...and breeding queens.

This method has been discussed on the forum before. I've gotta say, it does look like fun! You could attach the smoker to the boxes to make it more realistic.

What type of cell is this?

I've never seen a cell quite like this before. It's in a colony that has a newly emerged supersedure queen. To me it looks like a "dreen" cell :) Ordinary capped drone and worker cells can be seen near it. It looks like I dented the top of it taking it out...but please ignore that.

    Uncapping knife heating

Having always used an electric knife and uncapping fork, I'm going to try a purpose build uncapping knife- serrated edge on one side and an ordinary edge on the other...to be water heated. I have four of them. What do people who use these find is the best method of heating and managing them...

    Purple Hive Project-Varroa D

I have a feeling that someone has already provided a link to this, but I can't find it on here at the moment. Anyhow, if they haven't, I'm wondering what thoughts are about it please? https://www.abc.net.au/landline/purple-protection:-frontline-defence-against/12492722 The above link seems...

    What's happening here?

Inspected a colony yesterday. First frame had a queen cell on it and the colony was a little smaller than I had hoped for. No eggs but capped larvae. I thought the queen had died perhaps, but the next frame had the queen on it. She is a young queen who had been laying well enough. Photos...

    Pollen source?

Hi all, There is always one that must wear different coloured pants. Any idea about this pollen? I can't say I've ever seen it before, nor were there any other bees seen carrying any.

    Queen cells

This is a photo of queen cells from a friend's hive. The one second from left is opened and a queen has emerged. If these are supersedure cells, how often do members see swarms issue from these, presuming these are the only two cells and the colony is strong?

Unexpected surprise under the swarm lure box

Inspected in a lure box today that I had precariously set up on the top of a very old tree stump remnant. The box was empty today, but for a large European queen wasp ....and a spider, who had made a couple of good webs in there. I left the lid off and went on to inspect adjacent hives...
