    Woodpecker damage -

I thought I had protected my hives against woodpecker damage - but apparently not!!! This was all done after I put the wire around the hive. Any idea what I've got wrong - wrong type of wire??, too close to hive??, not complete protection so that woody got inside?? I'm trying to be stoic...

    chicken wire/ woodpeckers

Hijacking the thread slightly - Are speckled woodpeckers as much a threat as Green ones. Have had a family of the former in and around the garden all year and saw one the other day - atop the trellis next to my hive. "Should I be worried".

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Only problem is remebering to put them on before zipping up the veil and arriving at the hive. I guess its to do with failing memory as well as sight.

    This years "Cock Up's"

the day before I was due to go on holiday the hive in the garden swarmed. Collected it into cardboard box and took it and a hive down to association apiary. Assembled hive with QE above floor to persuade her to stay in. Then decided to try to get them to walk into the hive. They did - its...

    Maxing your honey price

You say the honey should be 'clean, clean, clean'. Any tips on getting it there? Should it be filtered through muslin? My early experience it that it is difficult to get it to flow through a fine seive let alone muslin. I suppose one anser is to warm it - but how much. I a bit confused...

Suggested Answers Jordy In answer to your original question I found the following paper (from Warick & Leamington BKA) very useful when I took the exam last year. http://www.warleambees.com/pdfs/Possible%20answers%20to%20basic%20beekeeping%20assessment%20V1.pdf

    Another 14x12 question..

Thanks for all the input on this one. Yesterday I opened the hive and had a look at both brood boxes. There seem to be plenty of bees in both of them but I didn't think it warm enough to go pulling frames out just yet. However with the judicous use of a couple of spare supers and an Apiguard...

    Another 14x12 question..

I've not inspected after winter yet. I guess its only then that I can decide exactly what I can do. I was somewhat hoping that all bees/brood would be in the top box. I'm quite happy to wait a few weeks!!

    Another 14x12 question..

My colony is in a double brood box and was very busy collecting pollen yesterday. {I'm not sure if I've managed to attach a photo!!} I have been given to understand that the brood should be in the top box by now. I plan to move it into a 14x12 BB this year to make it easier for me to manage...
