    Two sealed QCs

....in my nuc! Stupidly thought I could nearly relax. Have seen BIAS and thought all was well and looking healthy to overwinter. To add insult to injury I thought I would mark the present young queen while I could spot her (and before I noticed the QCs) and the pen leaked all over her head. So...

How do winter bees live longer?

As the title says really, I know that they do, but how? Are they different physiologically or do they adapt somehow? What's the story behind this?

    Schoolgirl error

Didn't spot this until after I had culled the drone brood that it was hidden amongst

    Medicinal propolis

Propolis is for sale in a local health food shop. Seeing as my bees seem to love propolis production, can I harvest and use it raw somehow or do I have to do complicated things with it to get all the health benefits? Thanks BS

    Flow

Really stupid question, but how do you know if there is a flow on? I see the term written a lot and wondered what the signs are. I can see pollen coming in to my new colony, but can't spot nectar. I live in a small town, so it is difficult to tell what they are foraging on. Thanks BS

    DLQ picture?

I had a feeling I had a DLQ or workers, so I put a test frame in earlier in the week. There was no evidence of a QC on it today, but one of the original frames had what looked like a few sealed worker cells (see picture). I spotted her - she was piping like mad. Could it be that she is taking...

all drone brood except one QC?

I had a queen emerge on 28th May. Now there is a peppering of high capped drone brood scattered on 2 frames, no sign of worker brood, and multiple eggs at the bottom of cells. I also have a sealed QC hanging off the bottom of the frame. Is this going to be a dud QC? Any suggestions as to course...

    Sorting nucs

My bees swarmed on 22nd May. I split the remaining bees, half in nuc 1 and the rest remained in the hive, each with a QC. Both hatched on 28th May. On 6th June a large cast left the main hive, but we retrieved it and put it into nuc 2. I now have 3 frames of eggs and larvae in nuc 2, but...

    Swarm, now Q-?

My hive swarmed a fortnight ago, I split the remainder into two with a QC in each and removed the other QCs. Both emerged on Monday 28th May. This gave me a hive and a nuc. Then on Wed 6th June they swarmed again (cast?) from the main hive - I assumed I must have missed a QC. I put this swarm...

    Hiving a swarm

I had split my hive after a prime swarm with one QC in each, had the 2 queens emerge 10 days ago and so though I was safe to go away for a few days to leave them alone to go on mating flights. Well I must have missed a QC, even though I thought I was thorough, I had a cast swarm yesterday. I...

    QCs on day 7

I think these are about to emerge, (my bees swarmed last week, I am Q-) one in a nuc and one in a hive. I have knocked down one QC with royal jelly in each today. I feel like an expectant mother again! Will they stop making QCs once they hatch?

    Swarm in Piccadilly Gardens

"A worker put on protective headgear to displace the bees with a spray." The paper says "exterminate the bees with a spray" http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/news/s/1529906_is-that-a-beemx-swarm-of-bees-buzzes-bike-in-piccadilly-gardens

Position of hives for a split

My bees swarmed, so I have no queen. I have 3 fat sealed QCs so I am intending to split them and make up a nuc. Is the positioning of the hives the same as an AS? Thanks

    After the swarm....

So my cells were, in fact swarm cells - they went today. There still seems to be a good amount of bees in the hive though, but they were much better tempered today than they have been of late. I am left with 3 sealed queen cells - I think these were capped on Sunday/Monday. There is also an...

    Supercedure cells?

I would be grateful if someone could confirm whether these are supercedure cells. The first two are on each side of the same frame, the third (horribly out of focus, sorry) is on a separate frame also with an uncapped cell with a larvae in, and the last isn't capped but has a fat larva in it...

    QC in super

I had a look in my hive today and spotted a QC with larva and royal jelly in the middle of a super frame. I'm confused as to how it could have got there. It's a 14x12 with brood on 8 frames, 5 of which had eggs on this morning. I didn't see the queen, but she was there a week ago. There are no...

Location of queen cells - why?

I have read about supersedure cells being on the face of the frame, and swarm cells at the bottom, and the fact that this is also a massive generalisation. My question is why do they build them these places in particular?

    Entrance block

I have the half block in at the moment on my 14x12 (10 frames of brood/larvae/eggs, one super added) and they are very busy flying. What elements influence the use of the entrance block - should it be taken out now? Thank you.

    Bees moving stores

i'm sorry in advance if this is a stupid question..... When I put a super on, will the bees move any surplus stores into it, and if so, how will I know if it's leftover sugar from the winter?

    14x12 helping out a national?

My 14x12 is going great guns, 7 frames of brood and eggs and the rest stores left over from winter and pollen coming in like it's going out of fashion. My friend has a national with one patch of eggs from a new queen who is laying erratically as yet, and few bees. I've only been going less than...
