Colony increase by strain line graph.

I've been asked to give a workshop in Spring next year at a convention. My talk is on swarming and the various factors that lead to a colony swarming. What I'm looking for is a monthly line graph showing various strains of bees and the rate in which the colony size / queen egg laying rate...

    New Zealand Queens

Looks to me like the person who marked this queen is also a little heavy handed and pressed a little too hard to create a dent and where is the other antennee.

    Filtering Honey

If you help it through using a spatula initially it may help, if it has sizeable bits in it then put it through a kitchen strainer first but I wouldn't recommend heating any more or any higher temperature wise. HMF http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroxymethylfurfural

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Finally got round to extracting the honey from a hive that I left in a friends garden for the OSR last week, sadly the colony didn't collect much but they did well on something else which I'm guessing might be brambles or possibly hawthorn but after warming it through gently I was very surprised...

    Showing bees wax

With regards to the final product it should be free of bits so you will need to filter it carefully, it should smell nice and fresh so try and avoid over heating it. Honey cappings are preferred but if you don't have enough aim for presentation. In other words each block should look exactly the...

Shaking bees from Top Bar Frames

I can't promise it will work but grip the center of the bar with one hand very firmly then thump the top of your other hand. The quick jarring motion should dislodge the bees but shouldn't effect the combs. However: If the comb has a good arc of honey there is a risk it will simply rip itself...

same colony of bees swarming 5 times in 3 days, WHY??!?!

Sounds like more than one queen if they are swarming without her and not returning when they realize she's not with them. Before the problems started what was the state of the colony. IE when last inspected before they swarmed: Frames of brood Available frame space for laying Available space...

I think you'd need to get yourself a "pasma" certificate or you could be fined for using one of those. "All companies / employers who use scaffold towers should be aware that the Work at Height Regulations 2005 require that the assembly, dismantling or alteration of scaffold towers should...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Its great to watch a queen emerging from her cell but to watch two emerging is a bonus albeit the second with a little help from me. I had a queenless colony just over two weeks ago so I gave them a frames of eggs and let them get on with making queen cells. Yesterday I thought I'd take a quick...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I'm not interested in starting another debate in the rights and wrongs and differences in our respective methods of bee keeping as that has been covered to the nth degree already. Anyway, I only have your word to back up your claims which no disrespect to you but I find it difficult to believe...

Swarm #9 Video: http://youtu.be/o4fyE6fHvcM I can't claim that I collected this swarm as it was collected by a friend and given to me in a cardboard box but I'm taking the credit for putting them into a hive which is close enough to count in my book. My biggest concern at the time was the...

Swarm 9 ? Had a call yesterday about a swarm in Fareham. When I turned up I found this Guess I can't have nice sized swarms every time. A few minutes later I've shaken them into the nuc and you guessed it the nuc was sat on a dustbin. Feeling pleased with myself I stood back talking with...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Just catching up reading this thread tonight. Can I ask are the 11 swarms from your hives ? and if so are you actually bothering inspecting them ? To miss one or two swarming is one thing but allowing 11 to swarm and we're only in June sounds to me very much like bad management or at the very...

An alternative way of looking at it is the swarm prevention training some beekeepers are given to spot and prevent their colonies from swarming. I guess you could argue that perhaps some beekeepers in my local area need to inspect more often and read a few good beekeeping books. :rules:

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Not looking forward to tomorrow. I have to shift a colony that has been on the OSR, they are not going to be happy when I remove the top deep chamber for extraction.
