    Honey Super Frames Advice

I usually use Hoffman frames (BSN) and place 11 or 12 frames in the super. Having done some reading on here I’m thinking this year of using 10 and allowing the girls to draw out wider comb. If I start off with undrawn SN1 frames do I use wide or narrow spacers? If I use narrow to keep the bee...

    Bargeman’s Cabbage v OSR

We’re along Athelney and under siege from bargeman’s cabbage apparently 😄

    Bargeman’s Cabbage v OSR

I’ve just extracted 8kg of honey from one hive which I’m presuming has been cavorting in it. It’s very pale with a slightly herby taste. Is that similar to OSR honey ( which I’ve never dealt with)?

    Bargeman’s Cabbage v OSR

I have been reliably informed that the sea of yellow opposite my hives is not OSR but Bargeman’s cabbage. I’ve never heard of the latter and wondering if anyone on here knows anything about it? If it is BC it looks incredibly similar to OSR and the bees love it, but does it have the same...

    Just 1 Tree

Lime, the scent is amazing and bees love it. This is one we have on the farm, absolutely beautiful but huge!❤️

    Tattoo's

Don’t listen to the nay sayers! I have two tattoos both with different meanings and I don’t regret either. This bee was done by our local tattoo place (not my tattoo but nice all the same). Incidentally they’re doing me a shark tattoo soon👍🏻

To feel or not to feed…

Greetings everyone, I’ve had real bad luck in my first three years of bee keeping; lost two hives to CBPV and then my third hive had a drone laying queen. I’m now in my fourth year and hoping to have better luck and as such have three reasonably viable hives in the following states: Hive 1 - Nuc...

    Confused about superseding

So it won’t be a viable queen?

    Confused about superseding

One of my hives seemed low in activity recently so I did an inspection today and found there was only sealed drone brood and then I came across a fully formed (supersede) Queen cell with a grub inside and the cell was very close to sealing. There were much fewer bees than there should be and no...

    Not a waggle dance

Has anyone got any idea what one of my bees was up to do today. I was watching her on the landing board and she wasn’t doing a waggle dance but something else I haven’t seen. She was walking up and down and constantly stopping, pointing her abdomen skywards and then rotating it in slow circles...

How many first year beeks quit?

Keep going! I started four years ago, I got my first hive one June and lost it to CBPV in the September. I got a second Nuc the following year, looked after them and even got honey off in the July then I lost them to CBPV in the April! I got a third Nuc and lost them to CBPV this winter🤬...

    Sting Proof Bee Suit

Hi Amari, I went with the fencing veil. I’m used to this from by BB Wear suit and haven’t had problems in the past, however I have found the Sentinel suit veil quite ‘soft’ and it does blow onto my face hence I’m using the stiff Panama to keep it away.

    Sting Proof Bee Suit

An update to my original question! I bought the Sentinel suit and have so far worn it twice whilst changing over the fondants. Ive been hugely surprised by how airy it is! Bizarrely even wearing it indoors I could feel cool air drifting through it. Used it round the hives and actually felt...

    Hat or Veil?

Thank you everyone, on balance I’ve gone with the fencing veil. 😊

    Hat or Veil?

Hi, following lots of opinions and comments on my question about the Ladies Sentinel bee suit, I’ve decided to go ahead and order one. My next question is now, with a hat or veil? I’m used to just using a veil but as I’ve got the choice for this suit I just wondered what people’s preferences...

    Sting Proof Bee Suit

Thanks for these helpful replies. Looks like I’ll be going for the Sentinel, just can’t afford the BB Wear suit; furloughed, reduced hours, furloughed again and now facing redundancy 🤷‍♀️. Problem is I’m only 4’11 and let’s just say a similar build to Dolly Parton😄 By the time I get one that...

    Sting Proof Bee Suit

Having recently had a massive localised reaction to a sting on my wrist🤦🏼‍♀️ (I was digging in the veg patch when the little blighter crawled up my sleeve!), my GP has advised me to very careful around my hives. He initially suggested I might want to reconsider bee keeping but I think the look...

    Too late to feed?

Thanks Ian. I’m in sunny Somerset so hoping for a bit of warm weather still. I’ve got the entrance shut right down but the wasps have been relentless. Are you saying add thymol into the syrup?

    Too late to feed?

Hi, looks the wasps have been busy! I left my bees with a super packed with stores and was treating them with Apiguard. I’ve left them with many wasp traps and whilst the wasps were very busy this year the hive has looked ok. I’ve just been in to do an inspection and all the stores are gone ( in...
