    Apis Horrilibus

out of interest, does it make bees more aggressive following the first invasive inspection of the year? My first colony was very mild mannered last year. First inspection was pretty much the same. Yesterday they were pinging my veil 200ft from the hive, in the shade 5 minutes after closing...

    Smoke!

Some advice please from any wiser folk out there. Whilst at work today, I have been advised that a neighbour has set fire to a mountain of old garden debris that he had been creating in the past 3 or 4 weeks. This bonfire was around 30 meters from my hive but I am told that there was a lot of...

    Pollen, fondant or syrup?

Good question, I was thinking the same and would be very interested in the answered for the wiser and more experienced beeks. Bees have been very active recently with lots of pollen going in. Fondant is being taken down very slowly now. I was going to give it another week and then replace...

    Frequency of inspections

i was going to leave the supers on for them this year. I assume it is ok to use the same frames for extraction next year though? Also, why is it suggested not to feed while treating please?

    Frequency of inspections

Thanks for the feedback. Apiguard ordered but been waiting almost a week for now. I'll wait for that to arrive before opening up again. It is very tempting to be in there every week but I will resist!

    Frequency of inspections

I have read on here during August it is better to leave them alone unless necessary. However is it really a problem to inspect them once a week at this time of the year. As it is my first year with this hobby I am keen for as much 'hands on' experience as possible, but at the same time I do...

    Trouble finding queen and eggs

it was really loud. it was the noise that attracted me to it at first. but it didn't look particularly brightlyh coloured....but it did seem too big to be the queen. I'd say it was more than twice the size of a worker.

    Trouble finding queen and eggs

I have just noticed what I think is a queen flying around the hive. Certainly much bigger than a worker and drone. (almost twice as large) It entered the hive twice and then left again which I thought was strange but stayed buzzing around the hive still. I wanted to wait until tomorrow to...

    Trouble finding queen and eggs

Hello, 2nd week of first hive and appreciate some advice from experienced beeks. 5 frames arrived just over a week ago. First proper inspection today since their arrival and I could not find the queen which I suppose is normal for a beginner. Same with dificulty in spotting eggs. But I...

    Starting up problems

I turned the feeder over in a bucket beforehand. I was surprised by how much liquid came out initially but it did make a vacuum before I put it into the hive. I have been very tempted to open the hive up and check all is ok but all the books that I have read suggest leaving them alone for a...

    Starting up problems

Hi, looking for some advice from experienced beekeepers. I received my first hive and bees last Friday and set them up in a decent spot at the top of the garden. I left the frames out of the super and placed 1 ltr of syrup in a contact feeder in their place, as was suggested on the...
