I need to dig a hole...

Wow! It's November here too, will wonders never cease. I thought we put them in boxes and put lids on the hives to keep the rain out. You're one of those 'modern' beekeepers with all those 'new fangled ideas' aren't you. Unless this whole forum goes kaput someone will read this during hot...

I need to dig a hole...

Best to ignore whatever I just said. I did more research on abbreviations and realized what OMF means and that that you have topbar hives, possibly not warree so nothing would apply except for putting them in the shade.

If you haven't moved them yet be sure to put a screen across the entrance so they can still cool the hive, maybe even put a screen on top and set the cover crosswise. And place them in the shade. If you have the equipment you could add another box with empty comb so the fieldbees have a place...

    Wood mouse experiment.

All the mice I've encountered have easily fit thru 12.7 mm or half an inch. 8.3 mm or 3/8ths" seems to stop them all.

Best ideas to keep late season swarm trap bees alive through winter.

I don't appreciate being ridiculed. While I don't have the knowledge or expertise of a Dave Cushman I do have some to share. My dad was a beekeeper and a time study engineer so he enjoyed noticing and paying attention to small details. I am now 71, still a beekeeper, but not senile yet...

Best ideas to keep late season swarm trap bees alive through winter.

Another thing, if you're going to close them up all day and move them in the evening, make sure they have plenty of ventilation top and bottom. At least on the bottom.

Best ideas to keep late season swarm trap bees alive through winter.

Bees only have a short term memory that lasts about three days, so you don't need to keep them away for 3 weeks. Stick a fresh leafy branch right in front of the entrance at both new locations for a day and they will reorient quickly.
