    Bait Hive

Morning All, A question re bait hives. I current have one colony of bees ticking along happily. I’ve got a spare polyhive knocking around. I’m thinking of placing it as a bait hive. Questions: How far away from my current hive should it be? Am I going to ‘encorage’ My existing colony to...

    Pick up Truck

I drive a D-Max. Never got it over 30mpg. Short runs on country roads it makes little difference. My mate has shown me his at 40mpg but he's a rep so loads of motorway miles. Yours will be fine. But you will certainly notice your fuel costs will be higher than a little hatchback!

    Pick up Truck

You've done right with the auto then, I'd have done the same. The only reason I don't bother with re-sale value is I get my truck on lease so i don't sell them when I'm done! Its all about getting some more pennies back at the end of the day!

    Pick up Truck

I switched to a pick up two years and would not go back, bought a manual. Better for towing (3 ton trailer loads of sheep) than an auto and more fuel efficient. Only problem with them is the parking! But you will find tricks, aim for spaces around the edge of the carpark where you can overhang...

New Beekeeper - standard vs 14x12

Just FYI a poll I ran on facebook which got > 100 responses for which hives people would use if they could start over again. Interesting not sure what definitive conclusions can be drawn but certainly interesting. https://www.facebook.com/groups/BBKA.info/permalink/1749990931719054/

New Beekeeper - standard vs 14x12

Thanks everyone for the replies. Much to think about. I can't help be drawn to the idea of 14x12s but getting hands on experience before Tradex deals might be tricky! Back to my local BKA for some final deliberation before I take the plunge and buy a couple of hives I think. If anyone...

New Beekeeper - standard vs 14x12

Quick additional question. Does running double brood greatly increase inspection time? Vs a 14x12?

New Beekeeper - standard vs 14x12

@ pargyle Ah that makes more sense. Many thanks. I'm drawn to a 14x12 as an easier inspection in one box etc but worried i'm losing flexibility with it. Thought of running double brood is a bit intimidating though. Everyone has given me some more things to chew over anyway so many thanks!

New Beekeeper - standard vs 14x12

That is a good question! And one more question - if I were to go standards to start how difficult is it to switch these to 14x12s at a later date?

New Beekeeper - standard vs 14x12

@ Gwr Many thanks for your reply! Encouraging for the 14 x 12. Couple more questions to expand. 5. If you are using a larger 14x12 brood box, I understand the bees may be able to over winter in this without feeding. If this is the case from a productive / commercial point of view would it...

New Beekeeper - standard vs 14x12

@ Millet. Please could you tell me how do you extract from frames made to fit a standard brood box?

New Beekeeper - standard vs 14x12

Many thanks everyone for your replies. Much appreciated. It sounds very much like its a personal choice! Tricky when you've never used either option! From a productivity point of view. If you are using a larger 14x12 brood box, I understand the bees may be able to over winter in this without...
