when measuring the size of the box the bees will stop at the obstructions eg frames. filled frames etc so your 40l can be considerably smaller than 40l in the bees calcs,... they dont go round and add the extra bits together

foulbrood can stay for decades and not be obvious, but flare up when the bees are stressed, eg when starving, if you feed sugar syrup when they have plenty of stores they will just add it to their stores, then when you have your nice full supers ready to extract ... you are extracting sugar...
