Question on Nucleus method of swarm control

and what happens if you leave a sealed QC from which a queen emerges and they've started others QCs from eggs/larvae?

Question on Nucleus method of swarm control

I've read Wally Shaw's papers & found them very interesting and clear, he has a couple of zoom talks coming up

Question on Nucleus method of swarm control

True there are lots of different opinions and ways of doing things but I find understanding the underlying principles easier to remember and adapt to circumstances. So generally advice with explanation is more helpful than just a prescriptive set of steps to follow.

Question on Nucleus method of swarm control

Just had a reply from David Evans (the apiarist) saying he only leaves very small larvae in order to give a better idea (+/- 24 hours) of the emergence date of the new queen. I can see why that would be useful and I can also see why you might not be bothered and just leave a good open queen cell...

Question on Nucleus method of swarm control

did you follow the instructions in his blog to remove all QC's apart from one's with very small larvae? I've been trying to understand if that's meant to make a difference

Question on Nucleus method of swarm control

Thanks, but any reason to leave "one good open queen cell" as a keeper (apart from it just works)? In David Evans blog he emphasises the need to destroy all large queen cells and only leave ones with very small larvae. He has a picture of a 3 day old QC and says anything like that should be...

Question on Nucleus method of swarm control

The Nucleus method of swarm control moves the queen into a small new colony leaving the flying bees and brood to make her replacement. But I've not found consistent advice whether to leave them a) only one sealed QC (if there is one) b) no sealed QCs, (but large uncapped ones are OK) c)...

    Wasps + Honey - Apivar

So on a double brood we can assume they'll already have enough stores down in the brood box for winter? This is all new to me but I thought they'd need to backfill with stores as the brood nest shrinks and we might not be leaving enough if we took all the supers. Or does that only apply to a...

    Wasps + Honey - Apivar

at the moment the beekeeping itself is reward enough and we just want the honey for our own use and gifts. So if there's a surplus we're happy to let the bees have it.

    Wasps + Honey - Apivar

How would we leave the double brood a super's worth of spare honey? If we need to remove the supers during the Apivar treatment is the only option to extract and feed back?

    Wasps + Honey - Apivar

There are hordes of wasps around the hives and we haven't dared open them recently to extract honey or put in the Apivar. The weakest hive has one emptyish super, the middling has two fullish supers and the strongest has a double brood & 3 fullish supers. When we checked a couple of weeks ago...

    Wasps!

Read this post this morning and then saw the wasps were going to town on a couple of our hives but luckily I had some spare ducting in the garage and an hour later it was on both on them and working a treat, thank you so much for the prompt & brilliant solution. I left both ends open and the...
