    Bee Improvement day in Cornwall

Hi all, I attach a poster for a bee improvement day in Dobwalls (near Liskeard) that people may be interested in. We have a guest speaker of Catherine Thompson from Leeds University, who has been taking DNA samples of our bees. As well as lots of talks and demonstrations, all centred around...

    Oasis pad thymol dosage

Does anyone know if it's ok to just let the oasis pads soak up as much mixture as they can, or whether it is literally 20ml max? I ask because when I syringe the 20ml dosages into a tub to let the pads soak it up overnight, the top ones soak up more than the bottom ones. I was wondering if it...

Your action when you see eggs in qcs

Hi all, What is your action when you see eggs in qcs? I know technically it is not a definite call to swarm unless charged with royal jelly. If one does nothing until the next week, then they could be gone, if say the egg was 2 days old. I don't have the time to check their progress in a few...

    Plastic frames

I've been looking at plastic frames recently and I'm quite attracted to them. Robust. Easy to clean. Quick to wax and re-wax. No need to wire. I can see two types of plastic frame available. The frame itself, with plastic struts as a support, into which you insert foundation. And the frame...

    Spur embedders V Transformer

Anyone got any experience of using spur embedders to embed foundation? They're obviously a hell of a lot cheaper than a transformer, but how easy are they to use? I've seen two types. An American one and a Euro one. Both seem to rely on the same principle of heating the wheel in a flame and...

    Open Mesh Floors

Who uses them? Are they really 'better' than solid, closed floors in all year round use? (Mite monitoring aside.)..do they help the bees, or are they a hinderance?

What to do with a dead hive

Not sure whether to post this here, or in the health section, but, what do beeks do with their die-offs? If you know they haven't succumbed because of disease, is it ok to let the bees rob out the frames? Do beeks re-use any of the combs at all?

    Apiaries in orchards

I am asking a few questions at the moment as I am in search of better apiaries, for both, me and the bees. So experienced beeks, do orchards provide decent nectar flows, even if private and relatively small.....or is having bees in an orchard a sort of romanticised dream. Purely aesthetic and...

    Selling honey to shops-mark up/down.

To those who sell their honey at retail outlets of various kinds: How much do you mark your honey down (relative to what you'd sell it for at the door) to the retailers. (So they can mark it up and get their profit.)? ie. if you sell it at £5.50 at the door, do you sell it to shops at say £4.50?

    Apiaries and hills

For those of you who live in hilly areas, or have experience of apiaries amongst hills. Does it make much dfference to honey production, whether bees are on, half way up, ar at the bottom of hills?

    2 apiaries better than 1??

Hi all, I operate about 6 overwintering colonies. In Summer that can rise to 12ish. At the moment, I rather inefficiently have hives all over the place, for one reason or another. I wish to make my beekeeping more efficient, both in time and practicality. I could quite easily operate a...

    Using a drill/screwing

Go easy on me as I am a complete DIY novice and trying to teach myself. When you screw screws into wood, how do you do it so it's just one easy process that slides in first time? It takes me about 5mins per screw. Yesterday I was trying to screw two wood ends together. I got 2 revolutions of...

    AMM as honey gatherers

Inspired by the interesting thread about NZ bees, I wanted to ask what are peoples' direct experiences of AMM as honey gatherers? I've read the books by Ruttner et al. saying that AMM achieve reasonable crops in any given year, be it poor or be it terrific, weather wise. And I've read the...

    Queen Excluders or Queen Containers?

Who doesn't use QXs and what are your reasons? I am thinking of going double broods next year on my prolific colonies and ditching the QX.
