    workers wanted, notts area

Just to finalise things: The new people came today to pick up the bees and it was all going swimmingly until I tightened up the ratchet strap on the first hive only for it, for some reason, to force the roof off (I think it was a piece of roof insulation that had come loose and stopped the roof...

    workers wanted, notts area

I think, over the years, that I have recoupled all my money in honey sales and the sale of the remaining kit that it cost me to set up so it's been an interesting time that hasn't really cost me anything; more than I can say for a lot of hobbies. Also, I still have 50lbs of honey to sell so that...

    workers wanted, notts area

Well, the problem is solved, I have found a buyer for the whole lot, feisty bees and all. So they live to fight another day, just not with me :), the new owner is much more experienced than I so they are in good hands (although I doubt the queens are going to be).

Ah, thank you. I trust it won't come to that if things go according to plan. I'm sending a list of equipment to my local BK society to try to find a taker.

    workers wanted, notts area

I know that is a slightly old thread but it is relevant, at least the last couple of pages. I am coming to the the end of my beekeeping time as I have lost interest and time, and my garden. The bees are feisty as hell sometimes and hard to inspect, plus one or two will come and get me up to 10...

    Location of brood nest

My method is to remove my honey supers in the first week in August and leave one or two empty ones on top of the brood box (if weather is good, two, if weather is not so good, then only one). A the end of October I nadir the supers, remove the Apivar strips, place the insulation back inside the...

    prizing supers appart

I have had four hive tools over the years. I suppose I still do, somewhere, but I put them down never to be seen again. If I ever find them they will be there with a frame lifter and a bee brush. They are in the garden somewhere, covered in weeds or half-buried in the ground, who knows...

    Giving honey back

Ok, I'll do it neat and leave the cup out, I did think that might be the best way but as with all things, it's best to be sure.

    Giving honey back

I have crap-filled honey from my old cappings that I want to give back to the bees and want to put it in a rapid feeder, should I put it in neat or dilute it with water so it flows in the feeder better?

    Location of brood nest

Let's say, just for arguments sake, I was to remove the queen excluder from a 14 x 12 brood box and let the queen wander wherever she wanted in a stack of, say, three supers. Where would she be likely to establish her brood nest? Top, bottom or middle? The reason I'm asking is I had a thought...

    Honey price

If I tried to sell honey for £8 a jar down here I'd still be selling it alongside next years honey. The truth is is that I'm not in it for the money anyway, it's just nice to get something for it. I like an easy life and if I charge £6 a lb and get rid of it quickly that's good enough for me. I...

    Current trends in mite treatment

Exactly what I do. Two different types of treatment in one year stops the little buggers in their tracks.

    Honey price

You're in Dorset, they have loads of money there. But as I've just said in the above post, yes, you are right about the 12oz jars. Strange things people think -- when I first started I sold in 12oz jars for £5.00 then I started selling in 1lb jars for £6 and people complained that my honey was...

    Honey price

I could get a lot more if I took it all with me when I go to see my son in Kent, I expect the shops round there would pay top dollar. Where I live here though is quite another matter, my village is full of builders, roofers and plumbers. They are all very rich but also as stingy as hell and not...

    Honey price

Problem with that is that I live just 200m from the shop and I would obviously undercut them so why would customers buy from the shop?

    Honey price

I sell my 1lb jars of honey for £6, what would be a reasonable ask if I sold, say, 24 jars to the local shop, assuming they also sold it for about six pounds?

    Minty

Can't say I've seen any round here.

    Minty

Bottled up my first super of honey and it has a noticeable minty taste, any idea what plants it could have come from? Can't be mint they don't flower until now(ish).
