    Tom Seeley new book

I was lucky enough to attend a talk by Prof Tom Seeley earlier in the week giving a few highlights from his new book to be published in April. This wasn't recorded to avoid content being released before the book. I thought the presentation was very interesting and accessible, and I will be...

    Too much ivy?

I cant remember seeing so much ivy flowering so early. I did a round of quick inspections at the weekend and found some of the larger hives have taken so much ivy nectar and pollen in that there is no room for the queen to lay. Very few of my hives have been fed more than a few liters of syrup...

    British gas fixed tariff offer

So, received an email offer from British Gas to fix tariff for duel fuel until end of September 2023. very scaremongering language IMO. And the offer? 203% more per annum than current standard variable rate Think I will pass on that and just police the thermostat and light switches more...

    questionable teaching or not?

A friend has purchased some woodland in an adjacent county and as he wanted to keep some bees, signed up for a taster day and then joined his local BKA. During a recent inspection at the teaching apiary, he was told that they were going to cull a queen and replace her because she was 'too...

    Insulating wax melters

I have up to now used either a solar Melter or more frequently a steamer and brood box set up to render down old wax for exchange, whilst at the same time cleaning old up frames . Neither have any insulation, are not tightly sealed and work fine. I now have a stainless steel container to steam...

    BFA membership

Rather than hijack another thread, I thought I would raise the question on requirements for BFA membership here. Potential member has been told to re apply when he has >60 production colonies. So allowing for nuc production and queen rearing this probably pushes total hive numbers to somewhere...

    New publication from RP

Received this in an email from Northern Bee Books. Roger has always advocated his own way of keeping and has been somewhat dismissive of others who did not follow his ways in the past (from personal experience some years ago). With this new publication, I'm hope he is genuinely trying to...

    First Mated Queen of 2012?

First full inspection (on March 16th) of a swarm from August last year showed loads of bees, pollen, nector, capped brood, with some grubs and three eggs! No Queen (i checked twice), but two capped Queen cells, and three open Queen cells. The Bees were on 14 x 12 frames, approx 4 frames of...
