    What the ... !?

I spotted quite a few of these hoverflies around my hives earlier this week. I also hunted them down online. They were at least an inch long! According to the detail I read they are common in SE England but not elsewhere in the UK.

    Wild colonies into hives

When I inherited an old hive full of comb (some of it on frames - some not) I did a shook swarm onto fresh foundation in my new(ish) hive. The colony drew it out very quickly and are doing very nicely. I did this for two reasons; 1. to get them on fresh frames. 2. to try to reduce amount of...

    Several issues...

You may find this leaflet helpful: https://secure.fera.defra.gov.uk/beebase/index.cfm?sectionid=69 I have the same thing - I believe that my bald brood is caused by wax moth. I am hoping that as that particular colony grows they will be able to better control the wax moth.

second brood or second super ?

Thanks to badger and to PH! I was wondering this about one of my own hives which is in exactly the same situation. They are filling the super up very fast and I am keen to help them build up their numbers should they wish to.

Hi, a friend told me that this was due to be republished this summer. I believe that they said August. Copies of older editions are changing hands on Amazon for large amounts of cash! It is an excellent book - the most useful book that I have read.

Queen cell with larvae in it

I shall do just that. Other than looking for a darkened tip is there any other way of telling that the queen cell is 'ripe'? If the queen has emerged the cell will be broken at the end - is this correct? Thanks for your invaluable help.

Queen cell with larvae in it

Thanks for all your help. I have been through the hive this morning and there were three capped queen cells in total. Some other queen cups with nothing in them. I removed all but one of the capped queen cells and will now leave them to it. I believe that the QC I have left was capped...

Queen cell with larvae in it

Thanks for your help. As far as I understand an artificial swarm - you leave the flying bees and queen on new foundation in present site. How would I go about doing an AS without the queen? Thanks. Daniel
