That's really helpful, thank you :)

    'flow'

From everything that I have read and learned so far (so much and yet so little, I will never stop learning, hopefully), I understand that a lot of knowledge and understanding can be gained from proper observation of our bees. I love going out there and seeing what colour pollen they are bringing...

    Homemade bee watering station

I have a chicken water feeder with moss in the bottom, but they prefer the murky water left in the creases of an old inside out compost bag!

    Excess stores

That's useful to know, thank you.

    Excess stores

Aside from being aware of the weight of the hive over winter and knowing whether or not they have used up the stores, is there any other way of ascertaining that it is stored syrup rather than spring honey?

    OSR newbie

Absolutely not the foggiest idea. I keep bees because I like them, not for the honey. Also I am a newbie. As my info on the left will tell you I have one hive.

    OSR newbie

They must be as special as mine are, because they have been foraging and coming back with huge pollen loads anywhere upwards of 11 degrees. I live in Wales, not sure we get to 18 degrees that often!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Just outside Hundleton. We have willow in the garden, and about 30-40 elm trees along our boundary. Amd dandelions in the lawn.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

8+ frames of capped honey in a super that we left overwinter, it got quite light/ empty and is now being refilled at a rate of knots. The pollen has been going in for weeks and weeks so far....

    Brood and a half

Quote; Drex: Hope Bearhouse does not run into that problem Me too. I am simply running the same as my local association do, since that's where my bees came from.

    Brood and a half

I'm only a newbie, so I'm sure that others with more experience will have differing views, but if you run brood and a half like that, isn't it giving yourself a lot more work with every inspection? We overwintered our hive with a full super over the top, but have been in today and made sure...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Our first 'solo' inspection without our mentor! Lots of pollen going in, has been for a few weeks now. Found Queenie and marked her, v.chuffed with that for newbies. Re-instated queen excluder below the super with which they have over-wintered. It's stuffed full of honey. Watched several new...

    Traditional, Comercial or Religious

'Traditional' in the sense that we make our own traditions. Not really interested in what Amazon and all the big corporations think we should be doing (and certainly made a point of not shopping on 'black friday', or today!). To us, it's about having our family together; there aren't very many...

Anyone else doing the uni round?

Have fun! My eldest is there and she likes it.

Anyone else doing the uni round?

With tales of people like that, it's not surprising that our neighbour was worried! One milk tanker goes past every day, a far cry from the constant traffic that we endured in the town. They have worked really late one night so far this year when silage making. One night out of 365, and boy...

Anyone else doing the uni round?

LOL. We are 'townies' who moved to the country in March, to a 200+ year old cottage. One of the best things is the utter lack of street lighting. Our nearest neighbour is a farmer, who was, apparently, quite worried that we would object to noises and smells from his farm. We did point out that...

Anyone else doing the uni round?

We are on year 2 of Uni trips! This time last year DD1 was looking at Accountancy courses, she is now at Cardiff Met and very happy. (Well, she hasn't come home so we assume she must be, she's not very communicative!). Currently involved in DD2's trips for Criminal Investigation courses, for...

Bees clustering under the wire mesh floor

If we had to wait for 20c in UK I think there would be a lot of unmated Queens!! It was 14c here yesterday.

    Recycling 12.5kg invert syrup cans

Buckinghamshire county council will take 1,2 and 3 in the recycling triangle symbols. We moved here, only to discover that Pembrokeshire won't take them. Something to do with how much they are prepared to spend on their recycling budget.
