    'Brilliant' idea from the BBC

Stuck for an idea for a Christmas present? Why not randomly give someone a WBC hive and then a nuc of bees in the spring! That was the recommendation on Gardeners' Question Time: Gardeners' Question Time - GQT at Home: Orchid Hunting and Clay Soil Planting - BBC Sounds 40.06m in, i.e. just...

    New wasp bait?

I should be interested in others' experience and comments, not least Karol's I have a small shed meant primarily for garden tools and similar, but inevitably it has ended up as overflow storage for ekes, clearer boards, crown boards, etcetera, etcetera. Over the last couple of weeks the wasps...

    Ventilation...

A very competent chippy mate of mine expressed an interest in beekeeping, preferably of the 'natural' kind. He therefore knocked together a very sturdy Warré hive and asked me to try it out. A few weeks a go I dropped a small swarm in there. Unfortunately his elegant dominoed mitre joints...

    Volunteer OSR

As across the rest of the UK, OSR planting has been in decline around here. This year I noted that a local farmer had planted something new in his former OSR fields, and as the new crop emerged it became apparent he was going for field beans. As they struggled through May, here and there I saw...

If it is in Wikipedia, it must be true...

The current entry in Wikipedia about propolis (Propolis - Wikipedia) has the following: "However, 20th-century research revealed that bees not only survive, but also thrive, with increased ventilation during the winter months throughout most temperate regions of the world.[citation needed]"

    Queen marking

Having mislaid my white pen I went looking on Fleabay for a replacement and found this, only £2.50 including postage from China: It raises several questions: Do the manufacturers employ people with very small hands? Do they try out their products on very big bees? Do Chinese giant bees not...

Xmas competition - uses for Supermarket 'honey'

I see own-brand 'honey' is back on the shelves. There was a good article by Wendell Steavenson in the FT yesterday: 'Ninety per cent of honey in Britain is imported and, according to Interpol, roughly a third of all honey sold in the world has been adulterated one way or another. Bees can be...
