    Hornet in Balham, S London

I saw this striking dark chestnut/yellow insect hovering wasp-like in front of the hive entrance this pm, the guard bees were out in force and it eventually flew off. It's the first time I've seen a hornet, it was huge - another horror to add to our beekeeping nightmares.

    Fumagilin-B

A friend in the US will be visiting soon. Apart from legalities, is there any good reason why I shouldn't ask her to bring me some of the above....in case I need a Nosema treatment?

    my first sting since September

I was stung today on the web of my thumb; it hurt like hell and mild swelling across the whole back of my hand. This was much stronger than my usual reaction - - is it because: either A) it's the first sting in over 5 months or B) The bee probably had 5 months for her venom to 'mature'?

    Apitherapy

I received this email yesterday: ...."My name is xxxxxxx and I'm currently studying in London. I'm writing to you because I'm in the need for (a few) bees and I found you on the UrbanBees website. I have an immune disorder called Alopecia Areata -which has no cure so far- and one month ago I...

    Robbing alert !

I put some wet frames on top of a hive this afternoon and it triggered 'robbing' by these bees from a nuc 4ft away within two hours....it was like watching a mini Berlin airlift. The Nuc entrance is now reduced to single bee space and hopefully there might be some heavy rain....

    Making your own fondant

I went back to the excellent "making fondant" video by Rosti in our video section to refresh my memory on how to make it. To save anyone else from wandering around Tescos or Sainsburys looking for those little jars of liquid glucose ---- it's now sold in a flat tube!

    bamboo queen excluders?

I've been piddling around on ePay recently bidding for hessian sacks and came across the above in the beekeepers listings. Surely they'll instantly warp inside a hot humid hive??

    Nosema

A microscopy check of of a sample 30 bees from my hive this pm shows they've got Nosema. They are the healthiest looking colony I've ever had - no signs of weakness and there's brood across 8 frames. I'm inclined not to treat them.....any comments? richard

BN Cedar brood box - pic wanted of frame lug support

Sorry, I don't have a camera so will have to describe: I've just looked in a new Cedar hive brood box (fully occupied) where the two sides supporting the frames had an upward wedge shape (like the ski jump ramp on HMS Ark Royal) which the lugs of the frames rested on. Is this standard design...

Please remind me, why use hoffman frames?

I've just inspected a brood box on hoffman frames - created from a nuc that was supplied on hoffman frames. It needed a hive tool to seperate each frame whereas with straight frames and plastic spacers I can seperate them by thumb pressure alone. Also, when reassembling the box there's an...

How heavy should a healthy full BN brood box be now?

I bought a very scanty 3 frame nuc in early August, housed it in a National brood box. After regularly feeding 24 lbs sugar syrup they've gradually drawn comb on /and occupied 11 frames. It now weighs (with only a cover board) 65lbs - about right to see them through the winter?
