    Italian Buckfast Vs Carniolan?

Years ago I tried introducing a carniolan Q to buckfast bees that were hopelessly Qless. They let her lay some eggs then killed her And raised their own Q. Later An old beekeeper told me that bees prefer the same breeds to themselves. That said, if you have nothing else then it’s worth trying...

    Decapitaed dead bees in winter?

I topped up the fondant today and as usual found a few dead bees on the top, nothing unusual however on closer inspection a number of them have been decapitated, same way wasps do this in late summer. However its February. Any suggestions before I go in deep?

    New queen

I used a plastic butler cage.

    New queen

I decided to experiment with a carniolan queen this year, so a nuc set up using a few frames brood & food from my mega colony & extra frames to make up to 6 in total. Left overnight to ensure a state of queenlessness before installing said (mated) queen. Several days later I had a peek, bees...

    Super almost full

Potentially, there is some about 2 miles away though they are in an orchard with access to multitude of blossom... probably best not risk it. I'll remove!

    Super almost full

One of my hives is on double brood to which I added a super a few weeks ago. On checking the hive the super is 3/4 full and capped and it's only early May. I've added another super but left the full one as unsure if I should be harvesting this time of year?

    Winter prep

This was my thinking - remove the super in the spring brood free. Many Thanks!

    Winter prep

I have a united hive consisting two broods and two supers. one super is almost empty and i will remove this but the other is full and i plan to leave as food stores for them. Ive heard conflicting advice over where to place this super - under or above the brood?

    new swarm cells after AS

Or remove the queen on her frame and put her in a nuc (with foundation less frames). Destroy the queen cell and recombine the colony, leaving them Q less? Then once honey finished, requeen.

    new swarm cells after AS

Darn I know this! Im kicking myself. Do you think its feasible to shake bees off the two brood frames I moved with the queen and put them back in the old hive? Then fill up the remaining space with foundation frame.

    new swarm cells after AS

Ok, so I placed the queen (on a frame of brood) into a new brood box. Added two more brood frames then added a further 5 undrawn frames. Replaced Q excluder, supers crown board et. Moved the hive a foot to one side. In the old hive I have destroyed all but 1 queen cell and marked the frame with...

    new swarm cells after AS

Last week I found my clipped queen on the ground outside the hive. I have done an AS but I couldn't move the hive very far from the original site owing to a mole problem (now fixed). 1 week later there are more swarm cells - 8 in total and 5 of these were on the frame. They are on 8 brood...

What brood farm to put in?

I will what you suggest, despite the loss there still remains a large covering on the frames. I managed to capture half a swarm this morning that I believe is Q- the other half was spotted on a hedge but went before i could get there. Anyhow they are safely tucked up in a nut so I could merge...

What brood farm to put in?

They have no brood at all now, couple with the delay new Queen becoming active (owing to their 1st Q swarming off who would have started laying by now) won't this risk colony collapse? By the time the new queen starts laying, the current nurse bees will become foragers and there won't be any...

What brood farm to put in?

My mentor is currently away (just when i need him!) so...... AS done few weeks ago, new queen seen last week. This morning a neighbour alerted me to a swarm on a tree next to my apiary. Tried without luck to catch it, but thought i better check my hives. Parent hive all is well, daughter hive...

Best time of Day for an Inspection

Afternoon, on a warm day thus lots of bees will be busy on the wing and the hive will be a little less full and daunting for you!

    pictures of my inspection yesterday

Aha! thanks for this! My mentor came up to take a look today and says all is very good - definitely no QC. This 5 frame Nuc arrived 4 weeks ago and have filled 11 frames with lots of stores - apparently ½ a supers worth. Mentor suggested i place two supers on top with crown board in between and...
