    Drone Eviction

One of my hives already chucking out the boys. Seems very early but there were a lot of drones in hive last week as I think new queen was late laying worker brood which now seems to be rectified. Is this normal at this time?

Out of ideas with a part swarm in willow trees

Managed to get about half a new swarm that emanated from my long hive in poly box yesterday and despite some girls fanning at entrance the other half won’t come down. I had made the misguided mistake as was a new queen last year would be ok so lax on last quick inspection. My bad. Lots of in and...

    Massive queen outside hive

Are they about to swarm do you think or new queen just returned. She does not seem to want to go in? Checked them last week and not big colony at all.

    No drowned bees

I have seen quite a few suggestions for stopping bees drowning in feeders eg tights etc. Over a week since new nuc installed and found using upholstery foam with no gaps down to syrup works like a charm. Not one dead bee. Cut not too thick to be too compressed but syrup is going down into hive...

    Something chewing on poly hive

I suspect a rat may have done this and have moved hive entrance over the frame so no longer any purchase for one but wondering if anyone can identify for sure?

Is this wax moth or worse?

Checking varroa tray and feed this morning and found these beasties. I have checked images and don’t seem to match wax moth or small hive beetle. Bees are active but clustered above poly brood box in the super I left on for winter and also have some fondant they have been eating. Any suggestions...

    Sublimox Pipe Insulation?

Does anyone have any recommendations for best tape to possibly place around the insertion pipe of the Sublimox. Have melted a lovely groove into the narrow entrance of my poly Swienty hives so had an idea something wrapped around the pipe may help. Stove tape looks too thick....

    Missing abdomen

Went out today to see two bees with no abdomen running about on patio In front of my hives. Had just done an inspection so not sure if they were casualties but would usually expect them to die straight away if crushed (I am obsessively careful in trying not to). They were about six feet from...

    Odd bits on Inspection Board

Can anyone help identify these bits on my inspection board. You can see a dead Varroa bottom left for scale. I have noticed it is concentrated in the same area every day for past two days when I inspect the board. There seems to be bits of it all over the board but wondered why so concentrated...

    Full top box empty bottom

I managed in error (wrong click on supplier website?) to buy double deep langstroth brood box this year with frames when my new package of bees had almost filled their new box. However Whilst only a late June package installation they seemed to be doing well with the double deep on top and...

    Hi from Rossendale

Hi everyone. Just got back on the horse after losing my first batch of bees to the 2013 winter/spring and probably aided by my inexperience. My batch of bees installed in June seem to be thriving so fingers crossed they will go into winter without a numpty in charge this time. Have already found...
