    Worth getting out apiary?

It is someone my wife got chatting to at puppy training class who runs a smallholding, she says she would love to have bees on site, but not have to look after them - she also apparently doesn't like honey  We do sometimes get notifications of people with land through the local BKA...

    Worth getting out apiary?

Thanks for the replies and good points :) It is around 10 miles away - so travelling not too bad, but not too close Looks like I'll make a trip over there, check it out and see if there is somewhere that suits the bees, land owner and me :thanks:

    Worth getting out apiary?

I've been offered the opportunity to put some hives on someones land. I am pretty happy with my set up at home (not short of space), and hadn't really considered it before, but I was wondering what the pros/cons would be to having multiple sites? Thanks!

    Web developing

Pretty much as above - though I would probably update the list to HTML, Javascript, CSS, PHP/Ruby. Def look at virtualization for learning / development If disciplined enough learn online as books and college courses are generally out of date before they are released

Artificial Swarm Fail: Query 2: Bait hive

As above, but have had good success this year with poly nucs (omf covered with cardboard) - I usually start with just a couple frames of foundation as was concerned about not appearing big enough (no idea if this has any impact) I have about the same success with my south and east facing boxes

Updates on alternatives to smoke - ?

I've been using water spray exclusively this season - so far so good. I do have a smoker should I face a situation where the water isn't doing the trick

    Propolis on Lino

I've heard washing powder works, maybe combined with a stiff brush

Swarm just moved into bait hive

Just to update on this - the move went fine, the following day a few bees returned to the bait site but within a couple of hours they had found their way to the new hive position. A week on, and they are all still with me - planning first inspection next(?) week

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Inspections - all ok, and transfer of swarm from bait hive to proper hive - lots of comb built, seem to be a friendly bunch

When should i put a hive out

Still, warm, dry day for mine

    apiary tours

I think it is a great idea - but as above, insurance a must, and think about so many people knowing where your hives are with risk of theft etc. One thing I found is to ask visitors to not wear purfume/aftershave etc as some can attract interest

    Is this theaft? Help!!!!

Rather than negotiating to look after them, I would be getting access to relocate them. It isn't clear from your post if he wont give you access to them to look after or wont give you access at all (i.e. to remove them) In my eyes this is theft - assuming you own the hive. NB I don't think you...

    Problem Sites

Re-queening would be my solution - and some sort of screen to make them fly higher

    Split hives

My understanding is that is more work for the emerging queen to do (killing the other queens before they hatch) - I've been advised to leave the best two cells on the same frame (she doesn't have to go very far to hunt them out), although as others say, some beeks say only leave one, but then if...

Swarm just moved into bait hive

Thanks everyone - I'm just waiting for them to stop flying and will relocate I did think about qx, but concerned she might not have mated (although by the size I think probably primary swarm) - so plan of action is to seal up box, move to permanent location, unseal and then leave for a week...

Swarm just moved into bait hive

Last week I had quite a lot of interest in my bait hive, then all went quiet. Then today there was quite a lot of darting in front of the hive as I was mowing the lawn, a couple of hours later and the sky was full of bees and the roar of their buzzing as the swarm moved in :D The bait hive is...

    Wasp Nests

So general consensus - leave them be, unless in my face (ie porch or bait hive as today)? Should I be concerned numbers up on previous years or just roll with it?

    Wasp Nests

Yep - thought I would throw the traps out there as had them Have been dispatching any queens - seem to be more than previously?? and had discovered a more a number over wintering in the house over xmas/new year

    Wasp Nests

Found and destroyed 2 small ones today - one of which the little buggers had put in my bait hive :/ Deployed a couple of waspbanes that I was given last year Wonderful how intricate/delicate the nest constructions are
