    Poly crown board

That sounds good. Where is that from?

    Hive wrap

Ok, good to know, thanks again.

    Hive wrap

To all of you who use these bonnets / cosys – have you seen moisture building up under the top of the bonnet, or on the top of the crownboard? Especially in winter, if you were to lift it off to see.

    Hive wrap

Wouldn't that mean the bonnet will be over the supers in the summer rather than around the brood area? Maybe you add more celotex beneath the bonnet, but wouldn't that mean you end up with bonnets of many different sizes – ones for full size hives, ones for new colonies, and everything inbetween?

    Hive wrap

Thanks for your replies. Am sure the bonnet way is a more efficient form of insulation. Looks quick and easy too. I'm keen to do something that I can leave in place all year around the brood area though, and not have to store somewhere. Finman – Is what you are describing a double walled...

    Hive wrap

I would rather be using poly, but wood is what I've got so... I'd like to check with those who are inclined to insulate whether the following way might not be a poor way of going about insulating the sides of the hive. Wrapping 100mm rockwool around the sides, maybe sat on some screws fixed...

Heads Up - Anglers Barrow at Aldi

    Could you explain why?

    Masonry bee query

Hopefully there's someone at your local BBKA who is experienced with cutouts. Maybe hand it over to them if they'll get involved.

    Masonry bee query

Oops. Good point. In my anger with the nature-haters I missed that bit. Sounds like you will have to have a closer look to see if they are honey bees. What you've now said about the activity being like a standard colony and there being two entrances the bees are sharing, they both make it...

    Masonry bee query

It seems very likely although of course I can't say for sure. They are active at this time of year and this is the sort of thing they do. They nest under and between the tiles on my roof and like kazmcc says there can be a few nesting individually in the same area, which on a warm day makes it...

    Masonry bee query

If it was me I would try to persuade them that killing a few solitary bees that are high up on a school building is madness. Unless they isolate the entire school under a biodome then insects will fly into the grounds sometimes. They probably think the mason bees are going to rapidly multiply...

    New queen needed?

I'm going to take Windowbee's advice and combine them. I saw no sign that the Queen is laying, so the simplest option for the moment seems to be to combine them. Thanks once again for your replies.

    New queen needed?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll let you know what I find once I've been inside and had a look.

    New queen needed?

Hi. I have two hives and one is showing very little activity. The other has many foragers returning at one per second or more when it's warm enough, but this one has very infrequent bees coming and going. There are definitely some in there, and I have seen pollen going in occasionally. I know...
