    Nuc with DLW

Thanks both, will just shake them out across the field and leave them to beg their way into whichever nuc or hive they want ;)

    Nuc with DLW

I have a nuc with DLW(s), if I move it aside and replace it with another nuc that needs building up a bit, will the flying bees go to the new nuc and beg their way in and will the DLW(s) also fly to the new nuc or do DLWs stay in the hive like queens? Or is this just a bad idea...?

    Beekeeping course

FWIW these are the main subject areas we covered in the 'basic' course I did a few years ago. The course consisted of eight sessions of about two hours each and were fortnightly. Honey bees and other insects. The Colony. Swarms. The Beekeeping Year. The Hive. Plants & Hive Products. Pests &...

Keeping frame warm while moving it

Job done, 45 minutes wrapped in newspaper and a towel, and kept upright too ;) now to wait and see if the bees will make queens on it..

Keeping frame warm while moving it

Allowing the hive to raise a queen is exactly the reason yes, I'll be sure to take eggs and young larvae and hedge my bets ;) Thanks for the input, I'll do the damp towel thing and hopefully if they aren't happy with the eggs they will accept the larvae..

Keeping frame warm while moving it

I need to take a frame of eggs, but no bees, to a colony several miles away, the journey will take between 30-60 minutes depending on the (bank holiday weekend at the seaside) traffic. the plan is to put it in a nuc surrounded by frames of foundation, do I need to worry about it getting chilled...

    Nailer recommendations please?

I found the same thing as peteinwilts, the tacks that came with the tackwise are horrible and jam constantly, ones bought separately are no problem at all..

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Took our 'commercial/national in a WBC' out of the lifts and set it up as a normal commercial/national so we can renovate the WBC lifts & floor etc. which are getting a bit rotten. Put supers etc on two hives which are doing really well and need the space, lots of drones and drone...

    Moving a Hive in winter?

Close it up in the evening, then come back the next day and gaffer tape all the seams, strap it front/back and left/right then put it on a sack truck and strap it to the sack truck too. use the sack truck like an ambulance chair to lift it up/down steps etc. The wife and I moved 4 hives this way...

    Why don’t vegans eat honey?

My comment was made with tongue firmly in cheek ;) but yes, that is an argument I throw out to vegans a lot, especially when they are getting all righteous with me because I dare to eat honey. I know the articles you are referring too and unfortunately many vegans believe this kind of stuff...

    Why don’t vegans eat honey?

Can I just say, hoping not to invoke the ire of the forum here, that the reason that vegans don't eat honey is simply a case of definition. If they ate honey they would not be vegans.. ;) Personally the only thing which makes me a non vegan is that I do eat honey, I consider myself a beegan :D

    Cell size

Quite reassuring that they aren't looking to make any drones at this time of year, the reasons for that possibility wouldn't bear thinking about! :)

    Cell size

I agree also, in fact that was the first answer I gave to my wife when she asked ;) FWIW I do have mentors available and make full use of them, but a week or so ago someone posed the question of why it was so quiet in here, if we all ask our mentors then there's nothing to be asked here and no...

    Cell size

These bits of comb were taken from different hives during the last few weeks, tonight my wife noticed that the cells on one were larger than those in the other, is this just normal variation? Both of the combs were built in ekes above the crown board while feeding 2:1 syrup if that makes any...

    What are these bees doing?

I'm not sure if I have really seen any guard bees, not that I would necessarily recognise them TBH, but certainly there don't seem to be any obvious guards. Not just on this hive either, I don't really see it on any of my hives. Probably I just don't really know what to look for.. Need to sit...

    What are these bees doing?

It is my video and my hive yes, it is an old DIY WBC (not my work, one I bought), late the previous night I had seen lots of bees crowding around the cone escapes in the roof and managing to get into the top space. Of course inside the top space was a gallon contact feeder on the crown board...
