    DLQ supercedure question

Here's a thought. I have a DLQ. I think I foolishly interrupted supercedure once (or twice) last year, or even the year before! (the bees knew what was coming) Do you think if I put a frame of eggs in there now then they might go ahead and supersede her? I know it's not an ideal time at all...

    Sugar wax

Evening All! Honey is made from nectar processed by bees. If they have processed sugar syrup fed to them then it is not honey and it is ‘illegal’ or ‘a lie’ at the very least. Wax aparently is a more ‘expensive product’ (by weight) than honey, and is certainly expensive for the bees.. So what...

    Fermented wet stored frames.

My freezer that I stored my wet frames of comb in doesn’t really work. It’s more of an airtight cupboard. Not even a fridge. I stored the frames wet, well treated with Certan, so no wax moth, which is a great success!! But, the wet frames have gone somewhat bubbly and fermented over the...

    'Best' forage in uk

So where and when is the 'best' forage in the uk (and why)? I know 'best' can be interpreted in different ways. The question is deliberately non-specific. Please interpret the word 'best' however you choose. And to make it interesting for people please explain how you have interpreted 'best'...

    Types of Lemongrass Oil

I can't remember where I read it... ...but I'm sure I read somewhere that there are a few different types of Lemongrass Oil and that one is far better/more suitable than the other/s for attracting bees to bait hives. Anybody have any ideas or knowledge on this one? BJD

    Anyone recognise this ‘S’ brand?

Does anyone recognise what make this old national lift might be?

    Wax moth acetic acid.

Hello, Got a dead freezer, but it's pretty air tight at least. Got a load of frames/comb. Some have wax moth b@stard larvae in there already. Have put a shallow tub of acetic acid sat on top of the frames that I have stacked in the old knackered freezer. Will that kill the little buggers?

    Los Angeles beekeepers...

Are there any beekeepers on this forum who live in the Los Angeles area? Please say hello if you are. BJD

    Wax moth honey bugger!!

Procrastinated too much after taking honey off and extracting (awaiting extractor loan also) and a quick loom in the boxes today to remind myself shows a wax moth infestation!!! Furious with myself! Is it possible/acceptable/ethical to still salvage some sort of honey/extraction? The chickens...

8 weeks to long winter prep...

Ok.... UK North Somerset I leave in 8 weeks (mid October) I return 5 months later (mid March) So that gives me 8 weeks to fully prepare 5 hives for winter into spring. Ideally that so on my return they haven't gone hungry or swarmed (run out of space)! Let's assume that I have no local...

Where to place extracted brood box.

I have two hives that are... ROOF BB (honey) EXCLUDER BB (brood) FLOOR I want to extract the deep honey boxes and return them to the hives without excluders and feed so they can over-winter on double brood. Would you return the empty box to the top or the bottom? BJD

    Post extraction demaree...?

Anyone ever do a kind of post extraction demaree and feed? To get a good load of young bees/brood laid up as autumn comes and a good feed to fill up a double brood for over wintering and support brood rearing into autumn. Thoughts? Tin hat BJD

    Bee breed specific breeders

I'm keen to experience colonies of different bee breeds. Since I enjoy reading about the characteristics of different breeds I'd love to experience this noticeable variation myself. So I'm in the market for some quality queens. I know who I'd get my Buckfasts from (actually purchased this...

    Moving supers for treatment

Has anyone ever moved supers off one hive and on to another to be finished off and capped so they can start varroa treatment earlier on a colony?

    Floor depth variations...

Who has experimented with significantly different floor depths? Happened upon some timber. Handy for making floors. Question is, if it had to be one or the other (as this is the wood I have got) would you make a floor with a depth of 37mm or 18mm. And your reasons please. For those who make...

    What's in my ebay purchase?

For the fist time an ebay purchase I think I may have got some half worthwhile stuff. Dadant/langstroth 'jumbo' bits. And some ross rounds. Seems like a lot of stuff from someone who once made their own frames and woodwork... including a load of half finished super side bars. However... any...

    Propolis and other 'products'

I think one of my colonies MUST have a significant proportion of Caucasian genes, as from reading up it seems Caucasians are the only bees who LOVE gluing the universe together with propolis! (also very slow seasonal buildup) This hive is like the inside if an alien spaceship! So I was just...

    New 'Nuc' to old position?

What would happen if a nuc, now in a full size brood were put in the old position of a hive that was just moved? Would it be fabulously staffed with a ton of flying bees? And they all carry on as usual? Or would it be carnage?

    Introducing laying queen from nuc

So my queens have arrived. They have been introduced to nucs. They have been freed, and are happily laying in their nucs. Now what's the best next step to introducing them to a big colony? From small nuc to bug colony. Push in cage? One was introduced to a 'nuc' in a full size brood... so...
