Keeping a hive inside a shed.

I was once offered an allotment as an out apiary - local council rules required me to have passed my Basic Assessment. Was also limited to only two hives, I had three at the time, with hopes for more... Have read of people using a shed with no roof, the walls act as a visual barrier to deter...

Hive is being robbed any advice please?

I had a problem with robbing from a weak hive (a failed split) that was in my back garden a few years ago, they needed time while the new queen was establishing herself. The advice I had was to feed some fondant in the evening and drape a large sheet over the hive. Hose the sheet through the...

    Very grumpy hive

An update: It's been 2 weeks since the grumpy hive was requeened. A reminder of the setup: Flying bees from the grumpy hive populated the bottom brood box, above that were three layers of newspaper, plastic queen excluder, then a brood box dummied down to contain the nuc which was recently...

    Very grumpy hive

Went back to the apiary last night and the brood box containing the grumpy queen was given a thorough soaking with the sprayer to dispatch those that were in there. Had a look at the combs and luckily only a little drone brood in there (unhatched) and no sign of any queen cells so her genetic...

    Very grumpy hive

I agree Pargyle, I don't want grumpy drones either, my other hives (a different genetic line) are lovely and gentle and I'm intending to do some queen rearing later in the season. I've done what I can as quick as I can to correct this problem - buying in a queen rather than waiting to raise my...

    Very grumpy hive

An update as requested: New queen was purchased from Becky's Bees and installed in a 3 frame nuc a week ago on Thursday. Nuc was placed on hive stand next to grumpy colony. Even my shadow passing the grumpy hive entrance caused defensive bees to enter attack mode. Any other apiary visits for...

    Very grumpy hive

Shaker box - thanks for that. She's unclipped and although not at her mating flight apiary I guess she could follow her bee's pheromones home. Thanks for that thought. I'm thinking if I set up a new brood box and shake them into it 'shaker box' style. If I find a queen - great she dispatched...

    Very grumpy hive

I've not been able to find the queen due to the comb being diagonal across several frames, so unable to inspect all frames individually, and the aggressiveness of the bees when I open the hive. Hence my thought to shake out the bees. This will cost me any emerging brood, if any, but the queen...

    Very grumpy hive

And another question - how long will it take for the nuc to be ready to merge? Thanks

    Very grumpy hive

Last summer I picked up a huge swarm (not from my own hives as queen was marked) and hurriedly put it in a brood box of foundation-less frames with bamboo skewers as guides (the only kit I had available as was in the middle of moving house) and left it at an out apiary. Unfortunately the hive...

    Covid related advice please

Remind the university that they have a duty of care to protect your son while in their residence. Therefore they should either move your son to a location where he can safely self isolate, or move the offending students out of your son's hall - possibly put all the offending students into a...

    Sliver linings

Eggmann - I'm sorry to tell you that your GP can't diagnose Covid 19 over the phone. It needs a test to confirm, which you don't appear to have had. There's a risk you, and your wife, may have just had a seasonal flu. Stay at home, please. Without proper testing, you and your wife may still be...

    Rite Cell Foundation

How does everyone go about sterilising their 'rite-cell' plastic foundation? I put a few sheets in my steam wax extractor (wallpaper stripper style) and it warped the plastic. I had emailed Mann Lake before doing this and they said it would be OK. They were wrong, so I'm glad I only...

    A bad day

    >I got stung through the face netting on my forehead for my troubles. Try wearing a baseball cap under your beesuit? I do, after being stung on the back of my head, through the hood material.

    Couch to 5 K

There's a few different c25k apps. Knee issues keep interrupting my schedule, too many miles on this clock. Nice thing about the app I have is the ability to repeat / step back to an easier workout until comfortable to proceed. As already said, plenty of stretching.

    northern bee books

I have bought a number of books from Northern Bee Books over the last few years, without fault. All delivered in a reasonable time frame; I remember one was amazingly quick (Ron Brown's mininucs) considering how rubbish postie was where I lived at the time. Also met him at the Somerset Lecture...

Hi and help on hive selection, to polyhive or not and what's wrong with langstroths!

visit a few experienced beekeepers locally with nationals, 14x12, langstroth in wood and poly. Get a feel for their kit before you decide and buy your own. I went langstroth based on hive capacity and it works well for my bees. i like the idea of Smith. does anywhere sell a poly smith hive?
