    First hive headache.

I started with Langstroth and did it the conventional way, i.e Brood boxes and supers with a QE. But after reading Tim Rowes book I decided to try it on a couple of hives so removed the QE and have swapped to shallow Dadant frames as they fit the Langstroth boxes, well after you cut a bit off...

    Why did they die?

It may be my eyes but is that bee poo on the frames? If so may be a sign of nosema which would of weakened them. There also isn't a lot of bees on the floor, were they a big colony going into winter as the cold snap last week may have been enough to see them off if they couldn't heat the brood...

    Recommend me a table saw

I got an evolution rage 5. https://www.screwfix.com/p/evolution-rage5-s-255mm-electric-table-saw-230v/9045v Lovely piece of kit and folds away a bit smaller. Has extendable sides for larger sheets, although not used them yet. I have only really used it for making mouse proof floors but am...

    Solar Wax melter

Plumberman, i put the wax in the stockings in my melter, it then seeps out as pure wax. I also use old margerine tubs to collect it as it gives it a nice block shape. The last few days have been ideal for solar melters. Peter

    Raising Sheep

Thought I would share this with everybody. A man buys several sheep, hoping to breed them for wool. After several weeks, he notices that none of the sheep are getting pregnant, and calls a vet for help. The vet tells him that he should try artificial insemination. The farmer doesn’t have...

    Started building today

There is no need to make it bigger than 8mm as that's all the bees need to get in. The idea is 8mm is big enough to stop a mouse getting in and round the bend. So to speak. The 8mm is the only critical measurement, all the other sizes can be changed depending on what wood scraps and type of hive...

    viagra

I have heard they are also using it in old folks homes at supper time to stop the men falling out of bed!!!!!!! Pete. :laughing-smiley-004

    Started building today

When doing my OMF I followed this plan. I liked the bit about a built in mouse guard as it saves buying extras and fiddling about. The bees haven't had any problems going in or out and it has the added bonus of a Varroa measuring/capturing board thrown in. It's by Graham White and has further...

    Mite drop following Oxalic

Dave, very interesting. Sorry for not picking that thread up. I think this is definitely something to try this summer. I plan on keeping a photo record of mite drop with the different controls, so it will be interesting to add this to it. Peter.

    Mite drop following Oxalic

Thanks, i have a nuc just waiting to go for the swarm with plans to build a new hive!!! I haven't had a look for brood yet, it has been too cold at the weekends for a good check. Has anyone tried the mite control with the drones and the super frame in the brood box???? I read it somewhere...

    Mite drop following Oxalic

Just thought i would share with everyone a photo of my bottom slide in board (under the omf). Did some Oxalic a fortnight ago (thanks go to Scott and Ged) and this is the result. As you can see from the amount of red dots, quite a few Varroa bit the dust. Hopefully that will make my bees a...

    Another Toyota joke

Saw the Prius joke so thought I would share another Toyota one I got sent the other day. Toyota have recalled their Toyota Yaris models because they didn't stop. A spokesman for the company said they were sorry for the delay in issuing the recall but it was only last week they found they...

    Mini nuc

Try http://www.beesource.com/build-it-yourself/. They have plans for 5 frame nuc's, 3 frame doubles and lots more besides. If they are the wrong size for your frames just convert the internal measurements to the same as your hives. Pete

    bee prog more4 tuesday 10pm

I would agree with the general theme of the posts so far. I was amazed at the treatment of the bees, it was all profit and no welfare as far as i could see. Especially when one of the keepers lost his bees, bought more from Australia and put them straight back into the same hives!!! I know we...

    Protective Suits - recommendations

I have also got a BB Astronaut suit. Material is exellent but the only gripe i have is with the quality of the stitching. It is weak on some of the pocket velcro (pulled off so need to re-sew it) and the stitching in the bottom of the side leg pocket has gone. I kept wondering why my Hive tool...

    Funny and true?

My missus has banned me from going shopping with her, not because of any of the reasons above but just because we usually spend £10 more when i am there, getting those nice 'little treats'. Or beer and wine as some peolpe call them!!!! :cheers2:

    Video help please?

Just had a look, excellent job. Just goes to show the kit hasn't changed alot in 70 years. They must be placid bees or we have got softer over the years as the only protection he has is his hat!!!!!

    Video help please?

PH, i have used Super C to covert videos to play on the Kids DS (for holidays). It also converts videos for phones etc etc so is quite versatile. It shrinks the DS videos down to a quarter of the size so this may work for you tube too??? (smaller image size) http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html...
