Brood in the winter food super

Hi, Over the winter I left a super on one of my hives for food over the winter. I also fed them fondant when it was cold a few weeks ago but left the super in place. On checking them now it is warmer, there is brood in the super. Please can you tell me how I can rectify this? Thank you!!!!!

    Varroa Treatment Question

Hi, I have some varroa treatment ready to go (Apivar Life) but one of my hives is trying to supercede the current queen. She is laying but not a lot. There are two really nice looking uncapped queen cells on different frames. Presumably I need to wait to treat that hive until the new queen...

    First Swarm Collection

Hi, On Saturday a lovely big swarm settled on a neighbour's tree. I managed to collect them and got them to walk into a nuc that I had to hand. I have ordered a hive for them to go in but it won't be here until Friday. The reason for my post is that I think the colony is too large for the...

    Amazingly they are still alive!!!

A few weeks ago there had been no eggs, larvae or brood in my colony for 6 weeks. I closed them up thinking they would be dead in a week or two because their numbers were so depleted. Yesterday I went to clear out the hive and was amazed to find 4 frames of bees with worker and some drone...

How to store an empty hive?

Hi, I have a hive that is now empty and I was wondering whether I can leave it over the winter at the apiary? I live about 4 miles from the apiary, so am hoping to be able to leave it there so that I don't have to transport it backwards and forwards. Any suggestions? Thanks

No room in the brood box.....

I have a weak colony of bees that were queenless a few weeks ago. I was offered a small colony with a laying queen and so united them. I left them alone for 2 weeks and on inspection there was no eggs, larvae or brood. They had also filled the space with food. I have been feeding them for...

Has she swarmed after only 6 weeks??

Hi, I just did a hive check and there are two queen cups with larvae in them. I can't find HM (she is about 6 weeks old and not a great layer. I haven't been able to see her at all since she hatched) and can't see any eggs (I'm not great at seeing them though). There is some sealed brood but...

HM Only Laying On 3 Frames

Hi, I am a bit worried that HM is only laying on 3 frames and is then surrounded by pollen and honey. The frames are as follows (Frame 1 is at the back and frame 11 is at the front of the hive): Frame 1 - Undrawn foundation Frame 2 - Partly drawn comb (fairly new development) Frame 3 - Pollen...

    Problem with Miller Feeder

Hi, I put a Miller Feeder on my hive yesterday. It has the space in the middle and the food then goes on either side. I have an Apiguard tray in top of the bridge frames, then an Eke, the Miller Feeder and then the crown board. I needed to collect something from where I keep them and noticed...

    Winter Preperation

Hi, I have a few newbie questions on preparing for winter that I can't find a clear answer on. I wondered if you guys might be able to offer some views of how you prepare? After I have completed the treatment for Varroa, I will look at the level of stores in the hive. They had a late start...

    Eggs???

Hi, I only started bee keeping in mid-June and then the queen swarmed in mid-July. I stayed away while they raised a new queen, which they seem to have done successfully, because there is a lot of covered brood and larvae on the frames. I am a bit concerned though because I now have an...

    Missing Queen

Hi, I started my first hive in early June this year from a nuc that I bought. Everything has been going very well and they have filled four frames with honey in the super - mostly uncapped at the moment though. Last weekend when I did a hive inspection the bees were very quiet and the queen...
