    Tips for beginner beekeepers

Hi all, I have written an article on a blog which is about tips we have all picked up during our beekeeping experiences that we could pass onto new beekeepers. Some of these tips are not covered much in the books we have suggested to us. Give it a scan over and comment on the article and I can...

Nitrile gloves - supply and demand

Thankfully, my day job requires me to wear nitrile gloves during my work. For the last year I have been saving three used (clean) pairs every working day for my beekeeping chores. Now my hoarding seems to be paying off:winner1st:

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I forgot to mention, plenty of drone brood but also quite a few drones mooching about too.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Just got back for a visit to my hives within the last half hour. One hive had 11 swarm cells. I completed an artificial swarm so i should have quite a few new colonies. The only downside is, it has meant dipping into my spare nucs that I was saving for my latest queen rearing project.

    Paynes or Maisemores Poly Nuc

I know this is quite an old thread, but there is a very good review on the Paynes poly nuc that is reviewed on a website. It's ideal for a beginner to read so they can make their decision whether they want to buy a Paynes nuc or not. http://www.freshfromthehive.co.uk/paynes-poly-nuc-review/

    Nicot cupkit failure

You should leave the queen in the cassette until the eggs have developed into larvae.

    Swienty poly crownboard

Thanks for the quick reply. That’s an even better design than Payne’s then.

    Swienty poly crownboard

Hi, I run mostly poly national hives from Paynes. They sell a poly crown board with holes for porter escapes. I am looking to buy some Swienty poly national hives. Do they sell something similar in poly version that will allow me to use porter escapes?

    Opinions on Second Quality Hives

Hi all, All my hives consist of poly nationals of which the performance I am very pleased with. I admit I am a bit paranoid when it comes to scraping propolis etc as to not damage the edges. I am continually expanding my apiary and and considering my next purchases. I have never owned a cedar...

    Queen Rearing Books

Queen Rearing Essentials by Lawrence John Connor and also Beekeeping At Buckfast Abbey by Brother Adam. The first book provides all you need to know to be successful, whilst the second one gives a good overview of the techniques used by Brother Adam, the producer of prolific Buckfast bees.

    Cedar or Pine?

Have you considered poly? Can last a very long time if covered with masonry paint.

    New bees?

I am quite lucky, I have a very reputable bee equipment seller several miles away from me. I also have a great local club near me that i must make more use of. I would only get my bees from either of these two sources.

Opinions - best vehicle for Beeks?

I would suggest a trailer to transport them or possibly an open backed truck.
