Aubergines -plant grows, flowers drop off

My aubergines have also failed to set. Should I have been spraying with water?

    Moisture content

No not "luck". Its just that there are more factors involved than just the moisture content

    Moisture content

This article published in the "New Zealand beekeeper " is well worth a read. Nothing magic about 20%. That is just the legal limit in the UK. Honey risks fermentation, according to this article and USDA , if it is over 17%. Whether it ferments depends not only on water content but also storage...

does this pale queen look right to you?

Thanks all. I was too hasty. Should have left her to see how she delevoped.

does this pale queen look right to you?

does this pale queen look right to you?

yes that would have been a good idea. Easy with hindsight !

does this pale queen look right to you?

On the frame she looked just like this, almost white compared with the workers. Interesting that she turned out a good one. Was she darker when mature?

does this pale queen look right to you?

It was a sealed cell when transferred, but I dont know how long sealed. Thats why I left it for a week before having a look. Its possible she had only just emerged when I looked. In my experience newly emerged virgin queens generally scamper around quite quickly. Not moving at all now as she...

does this pale queen look right to you?

Does this queen look right to you. ? She had emerged into the hive from a queen cell on a frame taken from another (better) colony. However i suspected that due to very poor weather on the day I transferred the frame, that the cell might have been chilled. So a week later I checked to see if a...

Can queens climb through queen excluders?

Queens do sometimes manage to get through a wire queen excluder. A slightly wider gap between the wires may not be at all obvious. I have never had a queen get through a plastic excluder. As your queen is still present and you have worker brood, its not going to be laying workers. Pretty...

    Drone Brood

I inspected 12 colonies on Monday and Tuesday (not all my own). Overall very strong considering it is still March, with the brood nests spread across 5 to 9 frames. Every colony had drone brood and a couple had a few adult drones.

How many jars of honey in a year?

Best year 2020 1050 lb of honey from 6-8 colonies: average 150lb per colony. Expect much less this year as OSR no longer being grown in my area

    Harper Adams in the news

Criticism of choices is fine by me, but not demonising or contempt for an entire group of very diverse people based on their own personal choice of how they live their own life.

Nothing there that i recognise in the vegans i know. Are you now labelling vegans as potential terrorists? Thats as ludicrous and offensive as labelling muslims as potential terrorists, or the Welsh as thick.

    Harper Adams in the news

IMHO stereotyping or mocking a group of people because they have made a different dietary choice, is no more acceptable than mocking people of a different religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation.

    Friends lost colony pictures

Dani, I hesitate to ask this but what does varroa guanine taste like? Other than "not like sugar".

    Boxes and Frames

Very unwise to draw conclusions from a sample of only 2 ;)

Hello from north of Farnham (Surrey)

By about year 3 you definitely need a plan for keeping the number of colonies under control. Its something you dont really consider in the first couple of years. I had just about cracked it then COVID came along and threw my plans into disarray. So I am wintering more colonies than intended...

    Candle making equipment

I would just add one thing to pargyle's list. A roll of non-stick baking paper is better than newspaper for covering worktops. Any drips of wax will just peel off and can be put back into your melting pot. The baking paper can be reused many times.
