    Cutting Off a Queens Mandibles

The above topic was in the September BBKA news, pages 313-314. You can have two queens in one hive. (Not mother and daughter.) I have read about this previously somewhere on this forum. One of our members resigned because he said that the BBKA was promoting this practice. What do you think?

    Wasp Nest?

Do wasps build nests at this time of year? I have two nucs at home, & today I've seen plenty of wasps heading under the slates on a bay window. Are they just there for the hunt?

Earliest time of day to move a nuc with a virgin queen?

I've been informed by their previous keeper that the swarm I picked up yesterday is headed by a virgin. I was going to move it today, knowing that any strays could go back to the hive they came from less than 100 yards away. Now I know that there's a virgin in there I don't want to move the nuc...

    Starting a nuc

I read somewhere that, when you wish to start a nuc to introduce a queen, you can put in frames of brood/bees etc from 3 different hives and they will not fight. Anyone have an opinion on that? .

    Laying workers

Are laying workers all nurse bees? I thought to shake them all out, and place a not- so built up nuc in it's place so the foragers could beg their way in and build up the population . .

    AS Question

If do an AS using brood boxes,(I don't know the name) ie, put queen with help in a separate box on original site, moving other box with the rest side to side regaining flying bees etc, I'm less likely to lose too much of the honey? Is there a way to do anything similar with a nuc, and not lose...

    Queen cell in Apidea

I put a queen cell in an apidea with some workers. Is the fact that they have stayed in the apidea for six days even though she has not (yet) emerged, a good sign? .

    Bee ID

I have two, I think types of bee. In two hives I have the swarm that I rescued  last year and split. The queen is a pale leathery colour, her daughter is black. I was told that she was a Carniolan. My other queen and nuc I bought as " black bees" the queen is black but the workers...

Moving a hive during the day

I have two hives at an out apiary, not too far from family homes. I want to move one of them (not pleasant bees)to another apiary out in the country. The other apiary is in a field so I don't want to move at dusk. Am I correct in thinking that if I move during the day any foragers that are left...

    Bad memory

I tend to forget things, so I've bought a cheepo Chinese gopro type camera. I'm going to wear it for all inspections, I just play back at home so that I can keep accurate records. I will write a plan of what I intend to do (apart from the obvious), before I open the hive, so if I get...

    Nearest osr

The nearest osr to my out apiary is 2.7 miles. Is it likely that they will travel that far? All there is nearby is wild flowers and gorse at this time.

Why do companies provide flat queen excluders with bottom bee spaced hives?

I've been taught, and I've read on the forum that my framed, wired QX should be place flat side up. So why are flat plastic or metal QX's sent out with BBS hives? .

    Two Nights Before Christmas

‘Twas two nights before Christmas, and all through my house, not a creature was stirring, just a risk-taking mouse. Then all of a sudden there came a great smash, I looked through the window - it was a sleigh crash. The sleigh was quite battered but seemed quite unbroken. Some language I heard –...

    Tatty Yellow Pollen

As above I couldn't get a picture. Quite a few workers are bringing in a yellow pollen that is hanging from their legs. Any ideas?
