    Fencing the blighters in

We have finally managed to get enough fencing done to get some sheep on the land. We have fenced off an area near the pond and replaced some long fences. Slowly getting rid of the barbed wire. Expensive getting done though. Now the question is what breed of sheep to get? My daughter wants...

    It's a Miracle!

At long last we have managed to harvest a few frames of honey. After lifesaving feeding for some colonies...our one big colony...which had requeened itself has managed to store some honey in the super. I had to take the super off so that I could put the Flow frames on. Feeling rather...

    Eeeek...starvation

I had a nuc which I had hived up...it was well insulated and also had a celotex follower board. It was doing well...lots of brood. I felt it was safe to leave it at the last inspection as it was unlikely to swarm. Yesterday...went in there only to find lots of dead and dying bees on the floor of...

    Captured Swarm with Queen Cells

Last week we caught a small swarm...covered about 3 seams. I didn't think we got the queen as they were all over the front of the nuc by the evening. :hairpull: So we scooped them up and put them in the nuc and carried them to the Bee Yard. The next day we let them out and they seemed happy...

    First Swarm Capture

Thrilling Beekeepery moment today. I went out to the garden centre to buy some herbs and strawberry plants....whilst my OH was busy increasing our colonies. He spotted a lot of bees along the field hedgerow...right where he needed to lead a horse past. He went to investigate...saw a patch of...

    Early Dearth?

We have been dry for weeks now...we did get a few showers but nothing since. The wind has been blowing and it is cold. No OSR near us so spring nectar has been slow. Two days ago....we had a warm day...yes ...actually warm. Then back to cold and windy days. At my next inspection I am going to...

    A Sweetener for feisty Bees?

Last year I had a nosema problem so used thymol 1:1 syrup to spray the bees on the comb. As the bees have been slow to build up this year....which may be due to the God awful cold weather...I sprayed them all during our first inspections. My bees are usually very quiet. The other day we...

Varroa feed off the fat stores??

This is part of a conversation about varroa and how they feed on bees. Does anyone know about this research? It's amazing what is being discovered. " And now that they have discovered that mites feed off the fat stores, not the hemolymph, they understand that the damage to critical functions...

    An American Can....apparently

Here is a flow frame which has been used to raise brood...several times!!! I know a small slim queen can sometimes get through a QE but my guess is that they used the Flow super as a brood box. Pity they didn't use their brain box!

    Blimin' Typical...

...isn't it just! I go away for a weeks holiday...one horse rips the other one's rug to bits The dogs think the kennels I took them to was worse than Colditz...they cried all the way home! One had to sit on my knee as he couldn't cope with sitting on the back seat strapped in. Now they won't let...

    Beetradex

Home again ...Goodies left in the boot as a cuppa called loudly to us...lol. Lots of trade stands and quite busy when we got there mid morning. Browsing was much easier in the afternoon. So many things to look at and marvel over. I took a flow frame with me as I wanted to see how they would fit...

    Where did Spring go to?

Complete white-out here...thick fog...well we are sitting in the clouds really...the bees are having a duvet day I think. Every time I go outside...I get soaked...it's like a wet blanket. I expect everyone else is enjoying sunshine. To cheer myself up...I'm planning my trip to...

    Spring Prep

Each year when the time comes to do the first spring inspections...there are a few surprises. Each year those surprises...I find out later could have been avoided...at best or quickly sorted...if I had the knowledge...and knew what to look for. For instance...last year I had a colony which...

Hearing about losses shakes your confidence

Not celebrating yet but feeling really pleased so far. After reading about colony losses this winter and with worse weather forecast I needed to check and add stores. This year I made sugar cartons ....sugar damped and pressed into takeaway cartons ....and dried over a radiator. I sprayed the...

    A Little Sneaky Peek

Today, having put it off since the weather has been so mild...I decided that it was time to check how the bees were doing in the Bee Yard. I haven't been there for ages...once they were all sublimated, sprayed for nosema and given syrup they have been left alone....well I have been busy doing...

    Bee Shed antics

In my Bee Yard...I have a Bee Shed.....well I say 'I' but the truth is that I can rarely even get more than a foot inside as my OH stores a load of 'Man Stuff' in there.....a strimmer....a bale of shavings....tools.....boxes of mystery items which must be kept. At the back of my Bee Shed is my...

    Contemplation and plans

I'm back after some time doing other 'stuff'. My bees are all wrapped up. So now it's time to think about how things went this year and what to think about for next year. This year wasn't an unqualified success... It started with the realisation that nosema had killed some of my hives during...

    Recouping last winters losses

Last winter I lost some colonies. I must say that I was very disappointed as the previous winter the colonies had come through ok. So now begins the preparation for the forthcoming winter and this time, hopefully, better prepared. I lost one colony, which had been really strong going into...
