    HACCP examples

HI, I wondered if any small scale beekeeper would be happy to share their HACCP for a simple honey extraction and bottling operation? I have just registered my premises for the provision of wild venison, over time this will evolve into butchery and other processing steps. When the EHO turns up...

    GasVap frustrations

I loved my gas-vap, then became frustrated with various torches, some worked for a while and then didn't seem to have the oomph to vaporise. Splashed out on a Rekrow torch from John and its a game-changer again. Easily adjustable, lights with the gas-vap in place, stays lit while treating...

Sole trader, Limited Company or what?

Thanks, this isn't a full on commercial enterprise just an interesting and developing hobby. I'll have to see what invoices for historical assets can be found and be a bit more diligent recording the annual consumables.

Sole trader, Limited Company or what?

I guess most 'hobby beekeepers' start with no intentions of anything other than having a go at keeping bees. After a few years they might find themselves with quite a few hives, selling quite a bit of honey and realise they should probably be declaring this activity. But the kit and colonies...

    We are saved!!

Back in the day Hawkwind had a song about an orgone accumulator.........perhaps they kept bees

    Seconds in the sales

Not the prettiest, but completely serviceable. I bought some two years ago and had two planks that were unusable, I got in touch and they just posted out replacements. I think they still need to be 'fit for purpose' even as thirds.

    Bad places to get stung

Once on an amble around the apiary a bee flew into my face (pure accident) in my surprise I snorted the bee inside my nose. I can concur with the pain and eye watering, thankfully no sneezing fit though.

    Expanding a little

Good question and one I have been pondering this year. I understand the issues of hardware, space and suitable apiaries with forage. Experienced beekeepers with c15-30 colonies must have some tips for maximising production? I struggle to get my head around how many production hives, versus queen...

    Additional BB

Definitely the 2nd BB below the existing. I did this with three hives this spring, two expanded down into the new space. One didn't need it and is happy in the one BB still. A forager that has flown up to two miles to collect isn't going to be phased by crawling another 20cm!!

    Requeening swarmy colonies

Thanks for this input. I'm going to try the following: Move Q- colony away and let flyers return to original stand; Give the flyers a box of foundation and one frame of eggs/grubs; Unite the Q- bit with another colony; In a week remove QC from flyers hive and introduce new queen. A

    Requeening swarmy colonies

Thanks for that, video was useful. So even in a Q- colony separating the flying bees is important to supress the swarming urge.

    Requeening swarmy colonies

The first colony I am sorting lost its clipped Q just over a week ago. All QC have been rubbed out and all brood is now capped. The bees are a bit lively at the moment (unsurprisingly). I have a 2019 Q that is laying worker brood is a good sized colony. Can I just unite the two? Q- bees in the...

    Requeening swarmy colonies

Hi all, has anyone got any tips for re-queening colonies that have been intent on swarming? I have several colonies that I needed to AS this month, the Q+ side built up quickly again and a couple have tried to swarm again and have now lost the clipped Q. I have made them hopelessly Q- and now...

    Bait Hive wins vote

Thanks. I went out last night for a proper look. Up the ladder in the rain, climbing into a fairly claustrophobic space and opening up the box made me slightly apprehensive. Lifted off the roof and found a few bees scattered about, but not as many as I expected. Then I realised they were...

    Bait Hive wins vote

Hi, My bait hive seems to have secured a vote of confidence this morning and is suddenly full of bees! It is a national box with three or four old frames of comb. Access is not brilliant (not sure I though this through) as it is in the roof space of the log store. Ideally I would like to move...
