    Drying up Honey

Hi I have extracted some honey. 80% odd capped. A little uncapped but passed the shake test... But its still showing 19.5% water... I know I should have tested before extracting but I did not have access to a refractometer. Is there a way of drying it up? Thanks Craig.

    Best filter medium

HI I am using a slow cooker for melting my wax. I am using double or triple fold Muslin to filter it through. I am quite pleased with the results. I would like, in an ideal world, for it to be a tad cleaner. I am getting through a lot of muslin as I have not tried to clean it. What do others use...

Found a queen on the floor

Hi, Just got home and very luckily saw a cluster of bees in the grass. Looking closer I noticed they were all over a queen. About 25 bees. They were about 5-6 feet away from a nuc i made up 3 or so weeks ago. Eggs were present last sunday. The nuc seemed to be roaring like mad, so I picked up...

    What have I extracted now?

Went to my hereford apiary and took off a super. 90% capped with no drips when given a hard shake. Uncapped and extracted. When I tranfered it to a bucket via the strainer I noticed it was very very runny. Maybe due to warmth in the house? Also, it tasted quite bitter and is a dark colour. I...

    Jars in the dishwasher

Hi. Just about to put some jars through the dishwasher. They are new and boxed, but I think I its a good idea to give them a hot wash. Do I put a dishwasher tablet in there or the hot water will be enough? Thanks

Extracting honey that should have been cut comb

Hi. I helped a friend last night take cut comb frames from his hive. It looked good and we carefully cut the comb out.... Alas, the container lids that I bought from a well known supplier do not fit the containers.... One corner always pops up. Its so annoying when these suppliers sell things...

    Melting and cleaning Beeswas

Hi I have collected a bit of burr comb and general beeswax. A little is white but a lot is dirty. Using only everyday kitchen utensils, what is the best way to turn this into nice clean wax? Or do I need to build a solar melter or a 'proper' melter?

    Laying worker

Hi fellow beeks. Inspected one of my hives to find what I suspect to be a laying worker. Some eggs on the sidewall of cells and some with 2 and three eggs in one cell. They are STILL not in the super, but I don't think that's related. I read somewhere that if I take the hive a few hundred yards...

    OK. Beat me up!

I know I will get trashed for asking this question, but here goes. Will the bees only 'fan' at the entrance of the hive if there is a queen in there? :sorry:

    Uniting advice

Good evening all. I have the colony from hell, but got to love 'em. Now, i think it's time to do something about them. I recovered a nice, calm prime swarm from the local concrete plant a couple of weeks ago. They are on 5-6 frames, with the Queen laying well. The physcos swarmed 2 weeks ago and...

    Wot!? No Honey?

I was just reading this months edition of Beecraft, where the editor writes that we should no be getting ready to extract the spring crop, if we have not already. I have had two and then three hives a few yards away from acres upon acres of lovely apple trees. Two hives on single brood and one...

What's happened all of a sudden

I visited a mate who had five swarms from two hives over two days. I got the phone call whilst I was checking my hive in the garden. Saw the queen but no swarming activity. Happy with my inspection, I made my way to my mates house. We got two (cast) swarms. I helped check his hives. 1 had no...
