    Drawing foundation in October

I have a hive where the queen was trapped above the QX for a couple of weeks. I was going to shake them all onto foundation and feed thin syrup to get them to draw out the foundation, then unite them with a QR colony. Instead spotted the queen and she laid up the super instead. I shook all the...

Ooops! The bees know best afterall

I hived a nuc a week or so ago. Inspected on Sunday and three capped queen cells on one frame. Marked queen was on an adjacent frame- she was a purchased queen from a big bee farmer north of the border - so I wanted to keep her! Popped a push in cage over her just to disuade her from leaving and...

How long is the field beans flow

I have just hived some nucs on a farm where the field beans are just coming into flower. I suspect that it is too late this year to profit from them as they need to build up for a few weeks.

    Queen introduction issues

I made a split last Saturday to introduce a new queen to. Two frames of emerging brood and a frame of nectar, with some fondant in the feeder of the nuc. I went in three days later and took down a handful of queen cells (impatient I know! I should have left them longer) A couple of days later...

    BBKA Insurance withdrawn

Just had an email saying that the BBKA insurance is being withdrawn at expiry because not big enough marked and the level of claims was too high... This covered theft and damage rather than the more limited disease cover from the local association. Minimum premium from other insurers will now...

Small hive - transfer to a Poly Nuc box?

I have a hive where I left a feeder on which I filled with straw and took out the plastic cup quite a few bees made it up to the feeder but not back into the hive and perished in the super above. The remaining bees are in a quite small cluster. Would it be sensible to transfer them into a poly...

    Wax moth in my super

I have just opened a stack of supers I'd stored in the garage to extract and they are full of waxmoths. Can I feed this back to the bees? I am thinking that if I put the super on the floor, then a crown board and an empty super above that then the brood box.... Then the bees will recover...

Thorns 12 frame manual extractor slipping

I have a 12 frame manual extractor which is slipping all the time. There are two nylon gears and the smaller one connecting the rotating barrel you load the frames into seems to have slipped down. The two gears don't mesh properly and this causes them to slip...and it is getting worse. I wonder...

Would you convert a manual extractor to electric?

I have a thornes 9 frame manual extractor (radial) and wondered if I should convert it to electric by adding a motor. Thornes have a motor conversion kit which is pretty expensive at nearly £420. I am thinking that 1.) I would extract a bit more honey from the frames 2.) A lot less effort 3.)...
