    Killing Nosema Spores on Gloves?

I helped a friend out over the weekend. One of her hives appears to be suffering from dysentery. I've bleached the equipment that I used. I was wondering if I put my gloves through a 40 degree wash if that would be enough to kill any nosema spores on them? Andrew

Feeding & trickling during the freeze?

What's everyone's opinion on opening the bees during the freeze to give fondant? And what about an oxalic acid trickle? Presumably the queen goes on hold during such cold weather? I fed well in the Autumn, but am wondering if they've got enough - they're buzzing very loudly: keeping warm and...

Hello Everyone, I'm going to be making an observation hive. If I place it where I want to place it the entrance tube would be about 2 1/2 foot long and nearly vertical. Would the bees be able to cope with this? Thanks, Andrew

Pieter Breugel the Elder (1525-1569) made paintings of peasants going about their lives within the landscape. Breugel's candid and descriptive style in his engraving of beekeepers allowed Martin Buckle, master skep maker and beekeeper, to re-construct their protective clothing. For the mask a...

    Bee Lining Success

I took the day off yesterday to walk my dog on the North York Moors - I noticed some honey bees and followed their line over half a mile of heather moorland. I found where they were headed. Hidden behind a wall somebody had made an apiary. I was a little disappointed as I was hoping to find a...

    Refractometer Reading is 22%

Have just but a refractometer and tried it out on a bucket of honey. I've marked the bucket as uncapped rape - which I initially tested by shaking the combs for loose nectar. After warming the honey the refractometer reading is about 22% water. I've used it as it came on factory settings...
