    Thornes e-mail shot

Someone will get it in the neck....lovely shot of a drone fly minding its own business on a flower, headlining Thornes pre-orders for Bee Tradex. I'm sure this will be the fault of a "creative" outfit somewhere.....but a bit of a b*gger that it got through! Schadenfreude.

    Walnuts in honey

Has anyone tried selling walnuts in honey? Seems to be a very good crop of walnuts this year. Internet searches don't throw up much of use. These are english walnuts and "wet" ...ie not dried! Could try roasting them, but just thought I'd ask in case anyone has had any dealings in this...

    UK grown Western Red Cedar

I'm having a load of local (Norfolk) Western Red Cedar milled shortly. I've had some before from the same source before, and it worked very well. The grain is wider than Canadian grown wood, but I can't find any detrimental aspects of this. There are more knots than foreign boards the trees...

    Cheap Sugar

Just in case any of you are looking to buy sugar, Farmfoods are selling Tate and Lyle at 39p per Kilo. Seems to be a good supply at the moment. Fill yer boots.

    Chive flowers

I've just noticed a rather lovely field of chives in flower....not sure how long they will bloom for, but I wondered if anyone here has had any experience or knowledge of putting bees on chives - does it yield? Thanks.

    Late swarm

B*gger me sideways- been away for a couple of days, and have come back to find a good sized swarm has moved into a stack of broodboxes and boiled frames. All my colonies are in out apiaries, so this is a pleasant surprise. Transferred them on to a mix of drawn combs and foundation. Not had one...

    Honeybees on SSSI

I've been offered a lovely site on a SSSI by the landowner. However, this has just been stamped on by Natural England as "The honeybees will deprive bumblebees and other nectar/pollen gatherers of their food". Nice to know they are doing their bit. They don't seem to be able to come up with...

    frame supplier

I see the spring convention is upon us. I made the mistake two years ago of buying "second quality wood" frames from the country's main supplier. The majority of these were used as kindling in the end - the routs and machining on the sidebars were several mm out and lead to foundation being...

Sugar syrup ratios - golden find!!!!

After years of brain meltdown when it comes to mixing various quantities and types of syrup, I've found an utterly brilliant collection of interactive tables to work out any and every combination you could need. Here it is.....RELAX!!!!! http://www.synthium.net/resources/convert.html#sugarmix1

    Birdsfoot Trefoil

Does anyone have any experience of this? I was feeling rather smug at having found two new sites each with about 10-15 acres of "nectar and pollen mix" planted....Countryside Stewardship land (I think this is posh set aside). The plant mix comprises Birdfoot Trefoil (lots), Red clover, Yarrow...

    Oilseed rape yield temperature

Does anyone have any idea how low a temperature rape can yield at? The amazing sunny and warm weather of the last week or so has brought the rape out nicely....and just as last year, we now have a strong, cold, NE wind blowing off the sea, at least until next weekend. Had a quick peek in the...

2:1 syrup into 1:1....any brilliant ideas?

Being blessed with a "special" brain, I'm having difficulty working out how to dilute my 2:1 thymolised syrup left over from the autumn into 1:1 for a bit of brood stimulation/justincaseage. (I was going to use fondant, but don't have any at the mo, and syrup seems like a better idea at this...

    Mouse guards from Queen Excluder

I've finally decided do close down my charity for homeless mice, and have made some mouse guards from strips of old queen excluder. Watching the girls that came out to check goings-on, whilst obviosly they can get through a QE (bit disastrous if they couldn't generally!), it didn't seem to be a...

    Queen introduction under Thymol

Has anyone had issues (over and above the normal regicide which seems to have been one of the quirks of this season) with introducing a queen whilst the colony is being treated with Thymol (slow release from oasis)? Just one of those thoughts that ran through my head as I popped a caged queen...
