    Plate warming cabinet

I'm after the combined wisdom of the forum, please. Has anyone considered using something like this: Hot cupboard Plate warmer 60 plates Ø320mm | Adexa EPW1 as a warming cabinet? Can anyone see any probs with doing so? I like the look of the one in Maisemore's catalogue, but £1200 plus is...

This is a weird one - I think...

I have had bees in a location near my neighbour's house for six years, but in recent weeks, my neighbour advised me that bees were flying in to her boiler flue and causing the boiler to malfunction/shut off... Has anyone else experienced this, or have any suggestions as to why this behaviour...

    Blackthorn honey

I have acres of blackthorn around one of my apiaries and it has been flowering in profusion for nearly 4 weeks. During the warm spell the bees were working it avidly. Does anyone know what colour the honey is, or if it has any particular flavour? Thanks

Pollinating strawberries in a poly tunnel

Hi, Does anyone have experience of the above, please? I have been asked to provide stocks for a new pick your own site and have been doing some research with very different answers. The two extremes are: a) bees can't cope with polytunnels/greenhouses b) bees will work in the...

Wax cleaning and a bruheat boiler

Has anyone tried cleaning wax in a bruheat boiler, please? Back in the day, when I used to brew, the element in the boiler would occasionally "fur up" and cut out during the boil. IIRC it was down to the sugars in the wort.... I intend to wash the wax first, so sugars shouldn't be an issue...

    Big cats - and honeybees???

Did anyone else think that the insects buzzing around the carcase were honeybees? https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/live/bbcone at about 20.15 If they were bees, it's the most bizarre forage......though I guess, as the old saying goes, beggars can't bee choosers. Fab programmes, even if there...

ID, please? Not much left to go on, though...

Has anyone got any ideas??? Found on the top bars of the brood nest. It's so propolised, I can't even see if it has two pairs of wings or not. The only distinctive features I can see are the size(!), large eyes, "parallel" venation, the remains very dark "fur" on the dorsal thorax - ginger...

Martha Kearney and "the wonder of bees"

I see that the above is being repeated on BBC 4, Mondays 7.30pm, for anyone who missed it first time round. There are some very odd bits which had some members on here denigrating it first time round, but it's a pleasing and fascinating programme for non beeks and it raised the profile of bees...

    vaporising:size of colony/brood nest:no. of mites:time of year

Can anyone point me to any tables/guidelines/research that correlates the above. It occurred to me that none of the stuff I've looked at compares the mite kill using a vaporiser with the size of the colony/amount of brood. I can only find figures that relate to natural mortality or drone...

    Maisemore polynuc feeder

I'm hoping someone will be able to help...has anyone else tried one of the above? (It's a Miller feeder, with a clear polycarbonate(?) cover over the feeding area). I put one on a nuc the other day and when I had a quick look an hour or two later, there was a lot of drownded bees. They...

    marking queens

What are your views on how early a queen can be marked - with paint, rather than glued-on discs, please? I only mark a queen after she has started laying after an experience, years ago, when I marked a newly emerged queen with Tippex. She immediately started writhing and trying to wipe at her...

Apologies if this has been posted before, but I stumbled across it while having a little post-prandial browse. Looks as if it could be a useful reference http://www-saps.plantsci.cam.ac.uk/pollen/index2.htm
