    Fanning at the entrance.

    Thanks all, I'll report back.

    Fanning at the entrance.

Does bees fanning their nasonov gland at the entrance indicate the presence of the queen or just an chemical signpost for 'home'? I had a cluster of bees beneath a hive floor which I suspected was returned virgin that had missed the entrance. But found no eggs in the wild combe that had been...

    Failed prime swarm - Resolution?

I assumed it was for same reason modified snelgrove 2 as per wally shaw suggests waiting until bees are expecting new queen to emerge. To aid acceptance and simulate that the bees have raised a new queen? Finman, we all know if a second hidden cell was in there that the bees would likely swarm...

    Failed prime swarm - Resolution?

Exactly the purpose of my 'extra' questions. To ascertain if my actions would result in success or if I should take further action. I can easily pop back in the hive and move the rest of the capped brood to join the three frame split leaving just one frame with QC and the rest foundation. The...

    Failed prime swarm - Resolution?

No emerged cell. And I'm pretty sure 99% the queen was not there I understand that I need them to loose swarm fever, but with only one QC won't they settle down after the process of new Q hatching/mated and beginning to lay? I didn't want to loose the strength of the colony by completely...

    Failed prime swarm - Resolution?

All, I inspected today and discovered what I think was a failed prime swarm. No queen seen, no eggs, capped queen cells. There were masses of bees and I'm pretty sure the parent queen was clipped. I thinned QC's to one and as a precaution took a three frame split inc. QC with a shake of bees...

What's the best way of improvising a floor?

I've got a couple of boxes like this. One temporarily had a 450x450 paving slab as a base. If you do it 25mm a champagne cork makes a perfect closer when your done. Or get a entrance disc (or 2)with your next supply order. This would make the box versatile for future manipulations. Simply pop it...

    Modified Snelgrove ll

2 out of 3 played by the rules. One now recombined, yet to inspect, after taking the newly laying queen and 3 frames to make a nuc. Second to inspect for laying queen this weekend. The failed one as I mentioned in another post, the flying bees didn't return 'home' suspect it was because I...

    Bees in house wall.

I understand your comment. And it is probably my poor choice of words. What I should have said is that a couple of local beeks had been contacted but were not able to assist. Hence my op post.

    Bees in house wall.

I've already confirmed they are honeybees and in reasonable numbers. A couple of local beekeper a have already been asked and they can't be bothered hence my post on here.

    Bees in house wall.

Does anyone fancy tackling a trap out of some bees in a house wall nr Marple Bridge. SK6 postcode. Neighbour of my inlaws. I'd have ago myself but I'm 180miles away in Bath. They are planning to get in some pest control company if no one can help who will probably destroy them. I've tried...

    Combining colonies

Next yr if I do Wally Shaws MS II I'll be leaving the entrances in the same direction and doing it in the morning on a sunny day. Or maybe turning 90 or 180 only for a day or two until the fliers have left the Q+ Side, so it's prepped ready for combining.

    Combining colonies

One thing I've considered is moving the whole lot to a second apiary and combining at the same time but this is a momentous task with the three double stacked hives I have all on 14x12's. Problem with this my second out apiary is my allotment which I'm not sure I trust to leave ££££ of bees and...

    Combining colonies

Interesting thread, which I would describe as preparation of colonies to combine and organisation of the combined colony. But could someone suggest how to overcome a problem I forsee. For my AS's I've used split boards, turning them through 90deg. If I simply recombine the two brood boxes back...

Time laps video of swarm arriving into a bait hive

Nice vid. What sort of camera did you use for seven days constant recording? Here's a pick of the swarm that arrived in our box last Monday. Really only had busy scout activity for the two days before it arrived. 20-30bees at times. Dan. Sorry not sure why its rotated my photo!!
