    Getting ready for winter

I've got plenty of spare foundation that I can frame up and give to them so once all the storms have passed I'll extract a few frames get a fully tally on the brood frames and put some foundation in for them to draw. Given the thunderstorms we've had in the past few hours I don't think I'll be...

How much honey per hive 2014?

Very true but as stated a little help with the upkeep is always nice! :)

    Getting ready for winter

There is definately no syrup in there as I've not fed them since the start of the year. It looks like as soon as the weather improves a little I'll be getting the extractor back out, cue the music! :) I didn't want to remove them initally as the chaps at the association told us to never extract...

    Getting ready for winter

I don't think I really explained the brood box situation very well at all. I've got around 5 full brood frames of stores and then 6 frames of BIAS surrounded with the usual nice arch of honey above them. Am I right in assuming the best route would be to uncap some of this and hope that they move...

    Getting ready for winter

The supers have been extracted and put back for cleaning so varroa treatment is next. I've been thinking about how I'm going to over winter my largest hive and was therefore looking for suggestions. There are still enough bees to fill nearly 2 supers so I don't particularly want to leave them...

Interesting day and some advice sort :-)

Same here one hive has frames full of brood in all stages. The other two have queens from A/S which haven't had the weather to get out and about although having one fly at my face gives me the impression she'd been out and got her bearings. The other has supercedure take place so currently got 3...

    Store or bottle rape honey?

Thank you, I have already read page 256 of Hooper. I've also read that heating honey past 44 degrees for a prolonged period of time will reduce the flavour and yet it appears that Hooper suggests using a temperature well past this to first produce a clear honey. What I am trying to figure out is...

    Setting up a bait hive

I caught a swarm with an old brood box part filled with used frames and a dribble of lemongrass oil (just encase). The box was sat on a paving slab with one side lifted up an inch. Completely against all that I'd read and a complete accident since I'd only put the box down awaiting cleaning...

    Store or bottle rape honey?

Right, I've got myself an old fridge, I've hooked up a decent fan heater and tested it. I can keep a constant temperature of my choosing between 30 and 40 degrees. So my next question is this, for a creamed honey how long should I warm 26lbs for? I've been reading up and some people say 30...
