Swarms from unmanaged hive - worth it?

Well, they say a good lie goes round the world before the truth gets out of bed! Also known in polite circles as spin.

    New Beekeeper in 2024!

For once I agree with jenkinsbrymair regarding using a smoker. Recent research has shown that the smoke de-sensitises the bees’ antennae for 10 minutes or so. Which means that they don’t react to the alarm pheromone.

    Beekeeping day courses

: Besides bee stings, what other injuries would you expect? It’s not mountaineering or free-fall parachuting.

    Beekeeping day courses

First Aid certification sounds a bit OTT, but perhaps you should get them to sign a disclaimer against being stung. Perhaps have an epipen handy in case someone is allergic. There is a lady in Brentford who does taster classes, I think her website was “hen corner” a google search will find her...

    7 Beehives Stolen Llandudno

Quad bike and trailer-that should narrow down the suspects somewhat. There can’t be that many of those about. Not a long distance vehicle either.

    7 Beehives Stolen Llandudno

Didn’t the police investigate the tyre tracks to try to identify the type of vehicle used??

    New Beekeeper in 2024!

Hi James, the forest fire explanation was taught to me in a beekeeping class. However the latest research I have seen says that the smoke deadens the response of the bees‘ antennae for around 10 minutes. I prefer the scientific explanation to the old wives tale.

    Oxalic acid

There was a chemical supplier selling oxalic acid on Ebay. 99.7% pure. Probably purer than the overpriced bureaucratic acid.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Had my hernia fixed in summer. They just shaved one side. It looked rather odd, so I had to even it up later on!

    Asian Hornets

One of the things that contributed to the spread of AH in France is the fact that a property owner might have to pay for nest removal. Thus a disincentive to reporting nests if they were not bothering the property owners. Hopefully in the U.K. nest removal will remain free of charge and...

    Asian Hornets...

It does bucket it down here occasionally, but there are no wetlands locally to my knowledge. Unless you count small areas of salt marsh.

    Asian Hornets...

I’m over in Brittany near St Malo for the last couple of weeks. I’ve seen one definite Asian Hornet and 3 possibles. The terrain and climate here are like Cornwall.

What would you do with very old honey?

Well I read somewhere that they found honey in one of the pyramids that was 3000years old and still edible. On that basis your honey should be edible if it was stored in a sealed tub.

    Equipment sales

I can’t seem to find the list of what’s on sale on Thorne’s website. Do they put up the list at the last minute?

    Smaller scale wax melting

Jenkins, stop taking the piss! Our water in London is OK to drink. It’s not really very hard either compared to water in Yorkshire for example.

    Getting creative with wax!

I like the beeswax luminaire, but having seen how beeswax burns, I would worry about it being a fire risk.

    Swarm in Chimney Stack

Hi Redcap, I have a basic bee-vac that you can use. I’m in London, but I’m driving down to Gosport on Friday afternoon and could make a detour via Farnham. If you are interested please send me your contact details. Looking at the picture, the access arrangements don’t look too bad. Mind you I...

    Bee veil stiffener!

I stitched in a large cable tie across the bottom of my veil after getting stung on the chin. I looked like I’d done a round with Mike Tyson.

need to try my first cut out

Well, from my limited experience (one smallish loft extension cutout) I would say use thick gloves. I made up a Heath Robinson beevac as as fast as we cut back the plasterboard, the bees retreated further into the recesses of the roof. When there was a decent clump of bees in the plastic box on...
