At what temperature will it revert back to liquid?

    A word of warning

I took my young son to an out apiary yesterday. He played in the field while I inspected a nuc that needed room. The weather had been stormy, but was warm and calm. The nuc went nuts, attacking me and were not deterred by sprays or smoke. I told nipper to get in the truck while I went in the...

    Oilseed rape and nicotinoids

If my bees are on oilseed rape, and this is treated, will the chemical be in the honey?

    Two Queens

Attended a multiple chimney stack today, one flue has a resident colony, and it has been there a while. Client called me as a neighbour had seen a swarm rise up from the resident colony and swirl down into another chimney. Whilst removing bees from the room where the fireplace is, I found TWO...

    Dead bees around hive

All clinging to grass or landing board, all carrying pollen. We're these early risers getting caught out by the chill of the eclipse?

    Bees need a cold spell

Can anyone point me to the science that says that bees benefit from or biologically need to be cold in the winter? Thanks

    Someone put me straight..please?

As I understand it, bees stash a load of honey away for the winter period. Bee keepers remove it, and substitute it with water and refined white sugar. Why is anyone surprised that bees struggle when we do this? Can anyone explain how sugar solution comes even remotely close to honey in terms of...

    Bees on TV

What was the two part TV thing on bees recently, can't find it anywhere
  13. I

    Well that's a surprise

Checked a nuc tonight. It was a very small group of bees (about two cupfulls) that were found in an empty room against the window. I assumed it was part of a swarm that potentially fell down the chimney. I vacuumed them off the glass and put them in the nuc. Unbelievably, eggs and brood!

    Sac brood?

Inspected one lethargic colony 14 days ago and there were dead larvae in the cells, red and greyish in colour, and were easily extracted from the cells. Check today, and no dead ones to be found, but a bit of sealed brood, no larvae, enormous queen seen, but no eggs. What do you think went on...

Pest control officer kills honey bees

The usual chemical used for wasp or bee control has a very long life, so is particularly dangerous for bees.

    Beware

Insufficient equipment, not enough time, poor planning = this mess

    Victim of ignorance

Meltdown today...... Swarms collected 2 weeks ago outgrown nucs already, colonies hurriedly homed 2 weeks ago in brood boxes with not enough frames built comb and brood on cover boards, so surgery needed. Note to self....formalise frames, boxes, supers, insulation, feeders. Nightmare having...

    Behaviour advice

I have been to two properties today, within 500m of each other. Each property called me out for wasps. Property 1 had bees going in and out of a hole in the ancient timbers, but many more flying in jabbing movements within a 2m spread of the hole. They seem to be investigating every hole...
