    Free Swarm. Based near Birmingham.

Due to an oversight I have a swarm available FOC. I gave up bees earlier this year but hadn't got round to selling on my equipment, anyway I left what I thought was a sealed give in my apiary and I appear to have caught a swarm. Haven't had chance to inspect them yet but hefting the hive it...

    Value of Colony. Please Help

Thanks for the comments, £300 sounds fair at the moment based on commets. They actually have 3 supers on, but I was going to have my last crop of honey before they go. I could sell the whole lot but I thought that would be a real unknown in terms of price. How much for each additional super? I...

    Value of Colony. Please Help

Due to a change in circumstances I am struggling to find time to properly look after my colony. So I think the right thing to do is sell up, as much as it pains me to admit it. It's a healthy colony on brood and a half with unmarked last years queen. I would be selling it with brood and a half...

    Suitable hive location

How are your neighbours with you getting bees? You have high fences to all sides so as long as your immediate neighbours are ok (1 door either side, they will be able to see hive anyway). My garden is probably a bit longer but not dissimilar in terms of location with neighbours at both sides and...

    Interesting read

I would love to try keeping dark bees but I think it would have to be a local group effort to have any long term influence on the gene pool (which would be nice to influence).

    Fondant experts...

I'm pretty sure my bees had enough stores going into winter... that being said, its my first winter and I wanted to be sure so threw some fondant on top of the frames the other day (bees looked in rude health by the way). If they use the fondant will they be mixing with water and then moving it...

    Just saying hi from Birmingham

Yes I really enjoyed the course but I never got round to joining the branch. Really should do that this year. The bees are doing good, I put some fondant on the other day to make sure they make it through to the start of the season in good health, they looked like they were doing pretty well to...

    Genes

That's pretty much how i described drones to my understanding wife. Flying sperm (in purpose anyway).

    Genes

I knew that but I was assuming that a drone would basically be a carbon copy male version of the queen. I didn't consider the impact of dominant and recessive genes from a single parent. Need to read more about bee genetics now

    Genes

Excuse my ignorance but how does that even happen? Surely with genes just from the queen, they should be the same?

    Timing of Feeding.

4pts will go in no time, so i see no harm in feeding before you go, might as well get them started a little. Mine will go through that in 24 hours or less, once they figure out its there.

    Supersedure??

Well if i'm perfectly honest I didn't check before I treated as ran out of time for a proper drop check as I wanted to treat in time to make sure i could finish the apiguard before I went away. However I did a mite drop check after the first week and over 7 days I counted 100 mites give or take...
