    Nuts in honey

I was browsing in a local produce store in Italy last week and came across a range of honey with nuts. They were asking about 10 euros for a half pound jar. I think the nuts were almonds. Has anybody seen anything similar in the UK ?

    Weigh scales

My scales have retired themselves. Any recommendations for a replacement?

Lots of stores in brood box

Temperatures here on my North facing hillside have only just started creeping above 13 degrees, but I was finally able to get at my 4 hives which seem to have come nicely through the winter. I had Nadired a part full super underneath each hive so getting these out was my first job. Although a...

    Nadired, what next

Each of my 4 hives had a single super remaining, each of which was mostly uncapped and less than half full. These have been Nadired. Since this is the first time I have done this, I would like some idea of what to expect next. Do they stay on all winter? will the bees move the honey up? will I...

    Nadiring

I have harvested an exceptionally good crop of honey this year from my 4 hives and removed the last 6 frames of capped honey yesterday. Each hive has a single super, each of which has several pounds of uncapped honey in it. My plan, in a week or two, is to remove the supers, treat by...

    An embarrassment of honey

My 4 hives have done exceptionally well this year, thanks to some very favourable weather. Last year, I got 5 jars of honey, this year I’m estimating about 40kg. I have got supers part filled which I would like to leave for the benefit of the bees, but never having been in this position before...

    EFB

There is EFB in my area but my hives appear to be clear. Could I still extract honey in the event that they catch it?

    Honey price this year

I didn’t have to consider this issue last year because the dreadful spring in these parts left me with a grand total of 5 jars of heather honey in the Autumn which I gave away to friends However, this year is going to be different. I will have enough honey to supply all existing local customers...

Too many stores left after winter

I can’t remember having this problem before, so a little guidance would be appreciated. I seem to have come through winter with the 4 hives I started off with and all are looking healthy with laying queens. Trouble is they have all got rather a lot of stores and could soon be running out of...

    MAQs

I have decided to give MAQs a try this year for my varroa treatment. I note on the packaging that the hive needs to be at least 6 frames of bees, and a couple of mine are borderline. One of them is from a split I did back in June, and the other is an older colony with a queen who is just not...

    Swarm in a wall

I have just been out to look at a swarm that appears to have settled into a void in the stone wall of a house just up the road. It certainly looks like the queen has settled inside and there is just a few dozen bees flying around outside or coming and going. Short of knocking the house down is...

    Sublimation procedure

It is a couple of years since I used my sublimation equipment and would appreciate a reminder on procedure, particularly do I need to allow some top ventilation while the vapour is being produced. At the moment I have the feed holes covered and insulation on top.

    Invert syrup shelf life

I have a few litres of invert syrup which I bought last year and I’m just wondering if it will be OK to use. It looks and smells fine and has been kept in dark and cool conditions. Does this stuff go off?

    Loosening heather honey

I have seen mention of loosening heather honey so that it will spin out of the foundation. Can somebody tell me what this involves please?

    Tangentail vs radial

Until now, I have only ever used a radial extractor but my wife has offered to buy me a new extractor for my birthday. The Konigin 3 frame tangential looks to be good value, after all I only have 4 hives. Does the tangential work better with heather honey? Obviously a bit more faffing around...

    Honey that won't filter

I extracted about 5 kilos of honey last week. It spun out of the combs easily enough although some was quite dark and may have been a bit of heather honey from last year that the girls had moved up into the supers. Anyway, the honey flatly refused to pass through my filters in the normal way...

    Electric extractor

Recomendations please for an electric drive extractor. I have only ever used a radial extractor and wonder should I consider tangential ?

    Stores removed from brood box.

Last week I noticed that the centre area of my brood box where the queen was laying was being hemmed in by untouched stores of honey. These stores were laid down last year prior to my Varroa treatment with Apilife Var. I removed several frames and replaced them with fresh foundation. So, big...

    Advice needed

Inspected my 2 hives today. In both hives the fresh brood is getting hemmed in by stores of old honey. I scored the capped stores with my hive tool but not sure what this might achieve. Should I just remove the capped stores and replace with foundation?

    Soft set heather honey?

I extracted about 10kg of predominantly heather honey back in early September. I used a fruit press, followed by the usual stainless mesh filters. I noticed last week that the 10 jars I had left were starting to go cloudy in the cool place where they were kept, so I moved them into the airing...
