Anyone imported any Italian bees recently? You might want to have a look at the NBU website.

    Swarm? Or not?

I guess your queen is down there, under the OMF. I had one do that a couple of seasons back. Returned from a mating flight and the bees set up shop under the hive. You will need to dismantle the hive, see what is going on and try and retrieve the Q and put her into the main brood body.

That is the one; the same, but different. I also appear to have had a "serious" spelling failure as well!

    Mite resistant queens wanted

How can you vouch for the continuity of the colony? What if they have died out and been reoccupied by a swarm? This may have happened several times. It's the "Trigger's brush" argument. Great if it true, but I have series doubts about the stated longevity of the parent colony.

    Maqs

I used MAQS last August, on 6 stocks. There was a definite 3 or 4 day break in egg production, but things went back to normal straight after that. There were no supercedures (queens were marked and clipped and are still the same now).

    When to make up frames

I make up my frames in advance, usually over the winter, and fit the foundation just before I think it will be needed. This works, as long as you have remembered to buy the foundation, so it is ready to fit!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Hornet traps were handed out at our association meeting in December. A joint FERA RBI/Hampshire BKA project. My bees are very close to a Hampshire airfield. It is regarded as a higher risk area; a point of entry, rather like a port such as Southampton. Hence I was given one of the traps (as...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Hung up a hornet trap. Moved my polyhive 3' to the NE - only 6' to go, so almost there.

    MAD Honey Disease

It should be replaced with Himalayan balsam whenever possible!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Hefted 4 hives. All ok for weight. Bees came out of all 4 to see what was going on.
