    Thorne jar filling set up

I've got to the point where filling jars by hand has become a real bore. I'm wondering if anyone on here has one of these Smart Weighing and Filling Machines from Thorne? Smart Weighing and Filling Machine I've been eying it for a while and would love to get some reviews, please. The capacity...

    Deaths Head Hawk Moth

Yesterday I discovered an embalmed Deaths Head Hawk Moth in the bottom of one of my hives! That’s a first for me…

    Nuc stolen in London

I’ve just discovered that I’ve had a nuc box stolen from my apiary in Hendon near the Welsh Harp Reservoir. It is a Paynes 14x12 poly nuc painted orange, exactly like the one in the photo. The colony in it is very strong - I was going to transfer it into a full hive today. It has a clipped and...

    Bees for Apitherapy

I’ve been approached recently by several people separately - they all want to buy a jar of bees to use in Apitherapy to treat various things. I’m not seriously thinking of supplying anyone, but I’m curious to know the going rate for a jar of 100 bees! Any one ever sold bees like this before?

    Large candle snapped

I’ve just had our local priest at the door. He’d just dropped the brand new paschal candle and it’s snapped in two! He’s asking if it can be repaired... I’m guessing that the only thing to do is to recast it? It’s 3” in diameter and about 18” long - I’m thinking a length of pipe? If anyone has...

    Bulk in shops

I’ve been approached by a local shop to supply honey in buckets. The idea is that customers will come to the shop with their own containers and fill them and pay for the weight of honey. Does anyone know if this is ok? I’m concerned about labeling, tamper proofing etc etc Thanks

    Poly Nuc compatibility

I have several Paynes poly nuc boxes and I'd like to get some poly nuc brood boxes that I can stack on top. Paynes are out of stock and I see that beekeeping-equip sell something that looks exactly the same (and is a few quid cheaper). Does anyone know if they are compatible? Thanks!

    Bees in poly tunnel

I’ve just had a slightly panicked call from a school - they have a couple of poly tunnels and today several hundred bees are trapped in them. They are not clustering but are mainly sitting on the metal hoops of the structure. I told them to keep the doors open and with luck they will find their...

    Bees wax crayons

My husband told me that a colleague of his was ordering some beeswax crayons from New Zealand for his child... They are a "super green" family (never mind the air miles...) I was wondering if anyone has had any success making their own? There are lots of recipes on the web, all with different...

    Showing frame suitable for extraction

Our local honey show is coming up and I've saved a nice frame to enter this class. Can anyone give me some advice about how/ if I should remove some propolis that is stuck to the top bar? Thank you

    DWV after apiguard

I'm just coming to the end of treating my colonies with Apiguard. There have been low levels of varroa drop all season, but I decided to treat anyway. Since treating I have noticed a total of 4 bees with DWV outside one hive. This is a very strong colony, with brood over 8 frames and they are...

    Wax for showing

This year I thought that I'd have a bash at entering wax into our local honey show. I have been saving up the cappings, have washed and filtered it a few times so I have got nice clean wax. The bit I'm having trouble with is casting into a cake that looks presentable. I've been using a Pyrex...

    Flower seed mix

Our small front lawn is under used and I'm thinking about digging it up and planting with one of the wild flower seed mixes that are available. Has anyone used one that they can recommend?

    Leaking Honey Gate valve

I've just extracted our first super this year, unfortunately the valve on my settling tank leaks. We have tried various combinations of tightening/loosening the screws which didn't help. I've decided to try and get a refund as it is completely useless. The one I have is an all plastic one...

    Uniting in Beehaus/Dartingtin

I'm after a bit of advice please, as I've never done this before. I did an AS at the beginning of May and I'm waiting for the new queen to start laying. I spotted her last week, so I'm hoping that laying will start soon. I'd like to combine the 2 colonies back together if/when she has...

    Beehaus divider board bee tight?

I just inspected my bees - I have one colony in one half of a beehaus. I noticed that in the empty side that there were about 50 bees. Does this mean that if I do ever have another colony in the other half that I'd need to somehow make the divider board bee tight? Also over the winter would it...

    Rapid feeder for Beehaus

I'm looking ahead to autumn and would like to get a rapid feeder for my beehaus. The ones that I've seen on line seem to be just bigger (by a couple of mm) than the width of the super. The sides of the super would probably flex to push one in, but I'd rather get one that fits properly. Please...
