    cleaning a smoker?

A bit of high temperature is the key as it displaces the compounds that hold the crap together but then why bother, we’re talking patina.

    Children

I would have thought the answer is in the kids themselves. They should be able to remain calm or they will be attracting trouble and focused enough to realise that they are dealing with wild creatures. I believe kids of any age can witness the marvels of the hive so long as they are properly...

    2nd hive entrance for supers?

I'm sure they do Admin. I think it's cultural thing, as you know they have very different ideas about beekeeping to those in Blighty. Drifting and robbing don't seem to be as important to them as we believe they are but then their yields don't seem as good either.

    2nd hive entrance for supers?

Hi Skydragon, I think this is predominantly an American idea. Whether it's because they tend to use larger hives than those over here I don't know but I would stick with Thurrock bees and stick with the more traditional way. That way the guard bees have something to work with.

    Daft Question No1

Not too tough, the plane of the foundation is always kept vertical, just as it is hanging in the frame. Take out the frame, have a gander, rotate the frame top clockwise to the vertical and then allow the lugs to rotate through your fingers half a rotation like a flag, just turn it...

    Microscope

With regard to the Lidl microscope, I bought one for my daughter and it's really quite capable at low magnifications but it is as you might expect at that price. At the very highest magnifications is suffers from quite pronounced image distortion and chromatic aberration. I've not managed to get...

    bee wind speed

Whoa! I meant no offence. Nothing more than a little banter. I still stand by my original point about the dancing bee not giving a bearing to the 'target' but a corrected heading but it's of no consequence. I do remember reading it recently but I have no recollection as to where. I...

Great article, I liked the one about frontal lobotomies as a way of reducing fractious and unsociable behavioural traits.

Ah my friend. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. I'll try to find some time to provide a citation for that little tidbit. H A Dade - revised edition 2009

Hi BCrazy, sorry, I must have been fast asleep. My understanding is that the 'organ of Johnston' detects the deflection of the flagellum by using a ring of sensory cells connected to the intersegmental membrane 'above' the pedicel (Anatomy and dissection of the honeybee, H A Dade. pp85). The...
