Swarms from unmanaged hive - worth it?

Really interesting to see this, thanks. Will you repair and put it back up?

Will the bees sort this out?

How about this one? And what has caused the damage?

1st inspection - lots of bees; no brood/eggs; can't see Queen

Put some swarm traps up. It’s much less demoralising when it goes wrong if you haven’t paid a fortune for your bees

I want to build a dovecote

I’ve spent most of the morning searching without success for info to help me build a dovecote. Simple things like how much ‘head room’ should there be in a nesting compartment… I want to make one suitable for three pairs of doves. I like the look of the hexaganol double tiered designs that...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Wow, did you just convert from single to double or do a demaree?

    Double brood or demaree?

Just done this and am now wondering if I should feed them a bit to help them draw the new foundation. They’ve got perhaps 2 1/2 frames of stores which I left on the outer edge of the bottom box (rightly or wrongly). There were 6 solid frames of brood which I split between the top and bottom...

    Double brood or demaree?

The temp looks set to be mid teens later today so I’m going to deal with this hive. I had a look at them this morning and they were already very busy foraging soon after 8am. They’ve built a fair bit of brace comb in the empty takeaway tub I was using to feed them earlier in the year. I’m...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Surprised to see the bees so busy at 8:20am this morning. Lots of dark orange pollen going in. The cool breeze didn’t seem to be bothering them, although nothing flying from the neighbouring hive.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Put my swarm trap up today although I suspect it will be a few weeks yet before it gets any interest. I love watching a swarm trap during the spring/early summer…it’s a bit like having a bird table or fish tank 😂

    Replacing old frames

To donate the brood to weaker colonies? Or to slow down the nucs? Or something else?

Will the bees sort this out?

The wax moth trail is old…I stored my frames in a chest freezer which I had operating for a week in the autumn to kill any larvae. The rest of the winter the freezer was turned off as it has a good rubber seal. Maybe I should have left the freezer on all winter to prevent the mould though? Just...

Will the bees sort this out?

    Presume it’s mouldy pollen?

    Under 3 feet/over 3 miles

I’ve tried these. They get super hot if even the slightest direct sun hits them so I’d say best used in complete shade. I haven’t had a swarm in mine yet but can’t see why they shouldn’t work, especially in a shady spot. Have you used them to good effect?

    Under 3 feet/over 3 miles

I agree, roof locations are good. My best location is in a cedar tree, about 10 feet up, attached to the trunk.

    Under 3 feet/over 3 miles

My experience is they much prefer swarm traps that are high up, having experimented with lots of different locations. I’d say the OP will have a better chance if he puts his trap above head height and ideally a bit higher…

    Rotating double brood boxes

So when you move the top box down you’re initially creating a honey barrier between the boxes I guess…which normally I understand would be bad as the queen won’t cross it….but the bees will just move the honey so it’s not an issue in this instance?

    Replacing old frames

Ok, understood. I haven’t replaced any frames up to now but some of mine are coming into their fourth summer so thought I should maybe consider it. What am I looking for specifically…just ‘manky’? Does it matter how dark they are or is that fine as long as they look in good shape? I was under...

    Replacing old frames

How/when do people replace their brood frames? Assuming you start a new hive with all foundation, so all frames are the same age. What should be the protocol for preventing frames from getting too old over the coming years?

    Rotating double brood boxes

I’m planning to move my stronger colonies from single to double brood this year. I’ve seen mention of rotating the boxes. Is this something I should anticipate doing during the season or is it only to be considered at specific times?

    Beekeeping forum split?

I would also point out that you’re only able to edit that section of your profile because you’re offering financial support to the forum. The majority of us who are too tight/can’t afford to pay a subscription can’t add our location that way.
