    Forum down time Important Announcement

My concern wasn't based on a "not invented here" point. 6.1 in the new T&C's require you to be the owner/originator of all material posted. 6.2 grants authority for anything you post to the new owners of the site royalty-free. Some of the material I have previously posted for education purposes...

    Forum down time Important Announcement

I'm just a little surprised that our own law is superseded in the T&C. As you may be aware there is a lot of concern about our exit from the EU over here so, to see the UK beekeeping forum being moved to the US will undoubtedly be seen as a sign of things to come.

Bit of a culture shock !

I'm more intrigued by the share feature. On the positive side, people may be a bit more considerate about what they say if they are likely to be quoted on other media but, on the negative side, there is always a risk that someone may be quoted out of context and embroiled in some flaming that...

2020 - is the consensus that its a bad year for beeks ?

If you'd had the courage of your convictions, you'd have taken him up on his challenge to send stock to him for testing 2 or 3 years ago. I did..and he came back for more. The bees must be good to prove themselves in his operation - and derogatory comments like that are hardly warranted when he...

2020 - is the consensus that its a bad year for beeks ?

I hate to say it, but, it's looking increasingly likely IMHO wrt queens, my carnica are doing pretty well too - a couple even found their way north to ITLD. IMHO, it doesn't take 10,000 years when the weather conditions are so similar. It's performance, health and - at the end of the day -...

2020 - is the consensus that its a bad year for beeks ?

I think the honey yield is lower here this year but it depends how you look at things. I've received (and requeened) a couple of swarms while not seeing any signs of swarming in my own stock. I've replaced some winter-loss incurred during storms Ciara & Dennis so I'll be going into winter with...

    Breeding from superseded queens

I have to confess that I'm a bit confused by what you're asking. Surely, if a queen has been superseded, she's dead? If you mean the daughter of the superseded queen, I wouldn't have thought there was anything wrong with the queen per se. It's more about what you intend to do with her. You said...

    Breeding from superseded queens

The 1a daughter receives 16 of her 32 chromosomes from her 2a mother and the other 16 from the drone which fertilised the egg (i.e. she is diploid). In this sense, she is more like the workers than the queen so it is unrealistic to expect her to be the same. Each new generation bears the...

    Hoffman super vs consolation frames

He was but he derived his inspiration from nature (i.e. no straight lines). Jekyll also had plants flowing together in drifts

    Hoffman super vs consolation frames

Not a follower of Gaudi then? Perhaps Gertrude Jekyll might be a more appropriate analogy. ;-)

    Hoffman super vs consolation frames

ALWAYS use Hoffman in the brood chamber. In the super, use Hoffman to get your foundation started. If, and only if, you want wider spacing in the super, consider spacers. These allow the bees to draw the comb deeper and store more honey on fewer frames (so theoretically cheaper)...but this is...

    Killing colonies

I think we're all blamed for swarms - no matter where they come from. In my case, I KNOW it's not mine as all my queens are numbered/marked as soon as they emerge. If the queen is still in her colony, they can't have swarmed! The thing about destroying a colony that has swarmed into a property...

    ISC committee report - Russia

This is a damning report, not only on Russian interference but our governments inaction/lack of interest The link to the report is here. It's no surprise that Boris Johnson tried to suppress it.

    Killing colonies

I have used "expanding foam wasp nest destroyer" (a Rentokill product in a back/yellow can) when asked to destroy a colony in the walls of a listed building. It expands like shaving foam but doesn't seal the cavity permanently so you might like to recommend this is done too.

    Inspection Frequency through the Season

There is an old saying: "If all you have is a hammer, every problem begins to look like a nail" so, it's ok to give beginners guidance on what works in the majority of cases. However, this should be tempered by a word of caution: these are living creatures and the guidance you've been given may...

    Inspection Frequency through the Season

If you feel that contradictory advice is being given, that's because you won't feel the need to "inspect" the colony so much as you gain experience. You will (or, perhaps I should say "should") learn to "read" the bees behaviour. I don't mean that to sound like a "dark art" but if you understand...

    Inspection Frequency through the Season

Doing anything without knowing what to look for and what to do if you do (or don't) find it is asking for trouble. You should really only open them if you have a purpose and the knowledge/skills necessary to carry it out. In these difficult times, beekeepers may not have the practical...

    Varroa treatment three year cycle.

My varroa treatment is continuous. It involves selecting those colonies that cope well with varroa and control mating them generation after generation.

    Varroa treatment three year cycle.

I can only imagine what that was like :hairpull::eek: I'll be using my usual formula that I've used since the mid-90's.
