When do you nadir your hives?

As a (relative) beginner I find this very confusing.... The argument for nadiring appears to be that initially any stores that were in the nadir when put under the brood box can be assimilated into those around the cluster in the brood box. Once that has happened leaving the nadir in place...

    Varroa treatment survey

I think Jenkinsbrynmair has it right, my poly hives are all 14x12 so close to a dadant in terms of volume and during the MAQS treatment had a super underneath each brood box and an eke on top to get even more volume. The crown board was open but directly under a closed roof while the omf had the...

Has anyone got a photo of a varroa-tray containing some of the critters?

Here are three shots from one of my boards after the morning inspection. The squares are 2"and in the closest shot you have 3 varroa and a handy bees legin the sqaure next to the one marked C as a further guide to the size of the beasties. This board is from a hive that is just about at the...

Help regarding Maisemore Polyhive and possible adaption

To answer your original question the maisemore hive corners are dovetailed, so you would not be able to link them end to end to make a long hive without some serious surgery I'm afraid. The runners are as you guess only on two sides as well so additional work would be neded to create the runner...

    Varroa drop rate with MAQS

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. Yes, the RBI was Regina, she certainly knows her stuff.... The latest 24 hour drops are encouraging, Hive 1 118, hive 2, 378 and hive 3 185. Hives 1 and 3 seem to be similar, both down to 23% of the first days drop, while hive two seems to be steadier...

    Varroa drop rate with MAQS

Well yes, it clearly works well! I guess I'm just a bit flumoxed about why they are so badly infested when prevous checks suggested they weren't too bad. Feeling guilty that I haven't been looking after them as well as I should. I was regularly dusting with icing sugar until I saw on here...

    Varroa drop rate with MAQS

Hi , I just put MAQS in each of my three hives for the first time after I had my first visit from the RBI last week. She said everything looked fine in the colonies but that it was time to get the MAQS in as a precaution. The mite drop from the three hives in the first 24 hours was hive 1...

    Maisemore sale

Just to reassure those thinking of ordering from Maisemore I ordered a Miller feeder yesterday at 3pm and it arrived this morning at 10am. Gloucester to Norfolk in 19 hours, pretty good I reckon!👍

Grumpy Bees and Requeening to improve temper

Success! Just by way of completing the story the temper of the bees improved considerably just as soon as the new queen started laying and they have calmed down even more now that most of the old queens brood has expired. Complete pussycats now.... So exactly as you said guys, thanks! :thanks:

    Drones being evicted already??

Yes, the flow seems to have slowed right down in my bit of Norfolk. I just checked the hive after the suggestion about stores but theres plenty of honey and pollen on the brood frames and three supers all at about 75% capacity. I didn't see any drone brood just now but did see the queen for the...

    Drones being evicted already??

One if my hives looked quite busy this afternoon, I thought it looked like it was being robbed so went to close the entrance down but on closer inspection the fighting was all workers going for drones. Isn't this rather early in the season for that or is it telling me something? This particular...

Hot air gun to uncap honey frames?

Hi, I was chatting with a friend recently and he suggested flashing the capping off full super frames using a hot airgun instead of using a knife. I tried it on one frame and it seemed to work brilliantly, just the quickest of waves with the gun and the wax pretty much vanished. Has anyone...

Grumpy Bees and Requeening to improve temper

My medium sized colony of quite aggressive Norfolk Mongrels have requeened after their old queen stopped laying and I removed her and introduced a frame with a queen cell on from a colony with a much nicer disposition. She has hatched and mated with whoever she could find and is now laying with...
