    Bees gone over winter

Even if they had dwindled, one would have expected the last few hundred would have died and still been present.

    Bee trees

My cats lay in areas of energy, if I draw a line thru them invariably they form a straight line E to W or vica versa. The trusted coat hangers and biro's cross at these places.

    Bees gone over winter

Absconding sound like the obvious but so late in the year ? Any other reason such as starvation or disease would leave some trace of them, such as bees head first in cells or a plie of corpses. How does the Asian hornet fit into the scheme of things, is the hive completely cleaned up without a...

    Beekeeping reflections

National was my choice simply for the longer lug with my butter fingers, though tbh by fingers have been worked hard during my 30+ years in the building trades.

    First bee-hive

In the most part we don't know the geographical area in the US where Lance lives, so no idea of what forage he has. A lot of difference to the UK where at this time of year a lot of us will rely on Ivy or Balsam to help top the bees up. Practices will vary from country to country with also...

    First bee-hive

Maybe best to contact your local Association to see if there is a local beek who can offer /help out. Even with covid the pair of you should be able to maintain segregation to protect each other.

    Beekeeping reflections

I take excess honey, my bees have yet to get thru 60, 80 or even over 100lbs of stores thru winter use. They get supplemented with stores if enough late forage isn't collected, often I only need to give a half or 1 gallon of feed.

Moving from standard National deep to 14x12

14 x 12 for me started to cause me back ache as overall frames are just heavier, also having std deeps I used eke converters. In the end I found the faff not worth it and reverted back to deeps. Double brood or B&H I have no issue with and are systems that work, I just adjust each one depending...

    How big is your entrance!!!!

UFE's as other have, though 2 colonies are having wasp issues ( first time ever for any of my bees). For now have used some GH glass stood up fairly tight to the hive front, wasps now not to sure of trying to enter. Wasp traps aen't really doing much maybe about 25-30 dead wasps if that. My...

    High varroa count after treatment?

One doesn't need to buy a heavy sla car battery, try looking on Amazon/ebay for Lithium car starter/boosters for about £30 -£40 these pack serious current for there size and are light weight. I use li-po and li-on 12v for many other uses.

    Beekeeping reflections

Wished I had taken it up long before I did. I didn't start by choice but by the wife who said one day I have enrolled us in to a beekeeping course.

    They won't take it down!

He (Hugh) has already done that but with a smaller hole for them, tbh a larger feed hole won't make any difference now except to allow more heat to escape.

    Hive Security

I haven't towed a live colony/hive with my pushbike/trailer but do use it to take broods/supers etc to and from apiaries, the towing weight is noticeable when taking 4 or 5 heavy supers/broods home for extracting.

What's flowering as forage in your area

    Probably avoiding the wasps.

Don't be so sure, I have tied a correx nuc of bees to my bike rack before now.

    They won't take it down!

One would think a 14 X 12 will have plenty of stores if all the other are filled with brood and stores. Try nadiring the super so the bees might move it up where they prefer it or try leaving just one shallow frame in an eke laying down to see if they will take it down.

    Illegal vaping and new laws

Social distancing doesn't in the most part seems to not be working in the NW.

    Hive Security

    £3 for a small push bike 105db alarm powered by a PP3 would initially surprise a t-leaf.
