    Electric or manual honey extractor?

    Lol, typical me.

    Clearing multiple supers

I had a hive with 3 supers in the spring last year, 2 were full one was maybe 20-30%. I tried a clearer board on a single super and it did not work. So I added and eak under, with worked better but still not very well. then I tried the empty super and was suggested to me at the time, and that...

    Electric or manual honey extractor?

I debated this before getting my extractor. I considered getting a manual, and upgrading it to drill-drive later. But paid up and got a 4 frame electric. I think electric extractor was one of my better bee keeping decisions. With the electric I can look in the top to see if it has extracted...

    Removing empty supers from hive!

I know bees move air to dry nectar, but it was not like that. There were not many bees in the supers, but once removed, some of them gathered on the top edges of the box and had their butts in the air fanning. The only other time I have seen this is when I have put a swarm in a box and the ones...

    Removing empty supers from hive!

The miss says she saw a swarm go into H1 today! A queen returning from mating hopefully. I opened the hive to have another look and put the clearer board on today. Even as I approached the hive it looked quite busy, with lots of yellow pollen going in. When I opened the hive, the bees looked...

    Removing empty supers from hive!

Agreed. There is much you cannot tell from tipping. But I find I can get an idea of whats going with shallows. Particularity if it a new box and I just want a quick peep to see how they are drawing some comb. Or to get an idea of number of bees. But I find I cannot see much when tipping deeps.

    Removing empty supers from hive!

Thanks for all the tips everyone. Well we finally got some good weather - until 4:30pm. And now its constant rain again! I have everything ready to go, so if there is the slightest break in the rain I will be out there. My wife suggested putting a gazebo above the hives so I can inspect in the...

    Removing empty supers from hive!

This hive was obsessed with building between boxes. It did it on all the supers last year. I do have a lot of home made boxes, but the brood problem happened between 2 proper-job ceder boxes. I think I did leave it too long before adding supers this year. I have 4 hives now. When I started out...

    Removing empty supers from hive!

I have not removed the space yet! It started chucking it down for the rest of the day yesterday, so I never got the chance to go back out. I have just got back from work, so am hoping to put a clearer board on in a bit - if it does not start raining again. I should have just trusted myself...

    Removing empty supers from hive!

Thanks, I was thinking of removing both supers, then leaving them on brood + 1/2. I get your thinking of getting them to a single brood, but they have a lot of stores in the 1/2, and they are mostly concentrated there anyway. Although I looked through today the weather was not great and the...

    Removing empty supers from hive!

The supers were bare, bone dry with a little cluster in each and a few scattered around. The Top brood (A 1/2) still had bees on every frame except the outside ones. Then the bottom brood (a full) only relay had bees on the top 1/3 of the frames. So what I mean was hardly any bees compared to...

    Removing empty supers from hive!

My bees are doing rubbish this year. :( It probably mostly because of the weather, its been c$£p compared to last year. I have not had the chance to inspect my bees for 2 weeks because of work/weather and other commitments. I had a good look at them all today. Hives 2,3 and 4 are doing OK...

Hi from a wannabe newbie in Bolton

Np. The other thing I did which worked out quite well was getting my bees late in the season. I did not get any honey my first year, so did not have to worry about extracting or the kit that goes with it. So I could split a lot of the start up costs over 2 seasons. I know its probably best to...

Hi from a wannabe newbie in Bolton

Hi Hoggj2000, I am still a noob having just started my 2nd full season. I just started on my own by ordering some bees and kit, I had planned to do a coarse but C19! So I ended up going it alone, but fortunately some wonderful people on this forum come to the rescue and have helped me along...

    Ornamental Hive

The title said "ornamental hive", I was not expecting a functional ornate hive! A truly fine piece of craftsmanship there m8. I just love it when people like you make unique and wonderful things like that. The entrance looks like it might get a bit tight in the summer, but its a fair size so...

    Introducing The Hive

I agree, I dont think security is a huge concern with The Hive. Still no answers, so my concern now is that the The Hives creators are perhaps not that committed to the project. I have no issue with The Hive being monetized, but would like to understand witch model they intend to use, so I can...

    When to put supers on?

Thanks for the tips. I put the (full) brood box on the top for the winter with the 1/2 below. It was between these boxes I had the problem. They did not do it last year. I have BB space, and my frames are bang on flush with the top. So I dont think incorrect bee space caused the problem for...

    When to put supers on?

So true. In most forums it seems whenever I ask a question I get the default answer: "That has been asked before, use the search" But here, every question I have asked, no matter how daft or noobish, has received an answer. There are always helpful people here who take time to answer...

    When to put supers on?

I like that swarm board, I may give it a go. I only asked when to put supers on, and now I know a new method of swarm prevention and how various ailments can be treated. In a segment in a documentary I watched recently they had dug up what they believed was an Anglo Saxon charm to prevent...
